"This is the third highest peak in Kerala and second longest trek with around 50 kms of hard trek. This hill contains a temple for the sage Agasthiyar. This is the deity of Kani Tribals who are utilized as trekking guides for the Agasthya Koodam trek. The view consists of three dams two in Kerala and one in Tamilnadu ambasamudram and the peaks of Pancha Podhigai and Naga Podhigai and various other peaks are mesmerising and you get the reward for a hard trek. The place is very windy and cool and normally beyond 12 noon people are not allowed in this peak because of unpredictable weather. Many a times the trekkers are stopped at Pongala Para and returned. It all depends upon the days climate. The later part of 40 days trek is bit sunny but definite of visiting the peak. The cloud kissed mountains are a treat for anyone."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If a family is keen on experiencing the region's natural beauty, exploring less strenuous trekking options in the Western Ghats or visiting nearby nature reserves might be more appropriate. For older, very fit teenagers who have prior trekking experience and are accompanied by experienced adults, a carefully planned and guided trek could be considered, but it remains a high-risk activity for children.
💰 Budget Travelers
To further save costs, consider forming a group to share expenses for transportation to Bonacaud and carrying your own food supplies. While organized tours offer convenience, they come at a higher price point. Self-organizing requires careful planning for logistics and ensuring you have all necessary gear to avoid last-minute purchases.
🧘 Solo Travelers
It is highly advisable for solo trekkers to join an organized group or hire a local guide for safety reasons. The remote trails and unpredictable weather can be daunting alone. Sharing the experience with others can enhance safety and provide companionship, making the challenging journey more enjoyable and secure.

The Agasthyakoodam Trek Experience
This trek is deeply connected to spirituality, named after the ancient sage Agastya. The summit features a temple dedicated to him, making it a pilgrimage for many. The Kani Tribals, who often serve as guides, hold this mountain sacred. The journey is often described as a test of both physical endurance and mental fortitude, with the reward being the unparalleled views and a profound sense of accomplishment.
Key aspects of the trek include the challenging climb, the rich biodiversity of the Agasthyakoodam Biosphere Reserve (a UNESCO World Network site), and the spiritual significance of the peak. The views from the summit are a major draw, offering vistas of surrounding peaks and dams, especially on clear days. However, weather can be a deciding factor, with access to the peak sometimes restricted due to fog and wind.
Planning Your Agasthyakoodam Trek
Given the trek's difficulty, physical and mental preparation is paramount. Trekkers should engage in regular cardiovascular exercises and strength training in the months leading up to the trek. Familiarizing yourself with the terrain through shorter, challenging hikes can also be beneficial. Carrying appropriate gear, including sturdy trekking shoes, layered clothing, rain protection, a first-aid kit, and sufficient food and water, is essential for a safe and comfortable journey.
For those seeking a more guided experience, several adventure tour operators offer organized Agasthyakoodam treks. These packages often include transportation, accommodation, food, and experienced guides, simplifying the logistics. While these can be more expensive, they provide a structured and often safer way to undertake the trek, especially for first-timers.
