"Vilachery a village at 18 km from Madurai city, famous for doll making.Since I was destined to be in Madurai by the blessings of Lord Meenakshi I thought of making the most of it.
Doll making can be traced way back to 1965. Artisans who make dolls are called Velars. While sauntering through the narrow streets on a bright Sunday morning, I noticed houses arrayed neatly with kolu dolls. i was told that the village has 200 families each into the same business. The houses were stacked in rows and the kolu dolls and terracotta horses were arranged neatly inside. Each colourful events of life was depicted through dolls. The army of Kolu dolls stacked neatly ranges from Rs.100 to Rs.50,000.

These dolls are arranged and kept along with Maa Durga during Navaratri."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Golu Doll Making

Vilachery is a village that breathes artistry, particularly known for its traditional Golu doll making. This craft, primarily practiced by the Velar community, has been a cornerstone of the village's economy since around 1965. Artisans meticulously shape clay and papier-mâché into a diverse range of figures. These dolls are not just decorative; they are integral to the Navaratri festival, where they are arranged in tiered displays known as 'Golu' or 'Kolu'. The dolls represent a spectrum of life, from deities and historical figures to common people and animals, each telling a story through its form and color. Reddit

The process involves skilled hands and generations of inherited knowledge. The raw materials are sourced locally, and the figures are often hand-painted with vibrant colors. Visitors can witness this intricate process firsthand, observing how simple materials are transformed into intricate works of art. The dedication and passion of the artisans are evident in every piece, making Vilachery a significant cultural hub for this traditional craft. Reddit

While the village boasts around 200 families involved in doll making, the business can be unorganized. Some visitors have noted that while the craftsmanship is undeniable, the collection might be limited in certain homes, and prices can be on the higher side due to raw material costs. Nevertheless, the experience of seeing these dolls being made and understanding their cultural significance is a unique draw for visitors. Reddit

Navigating the Vilachery Market

The shopping experience in Vilachery is distinct. Unlike a typical market, dolls are sold directly from the homes of the artisans. This means you'll be walking through residential streets, with houses neatly arranged and their creations displayed either inside or just outside their doors. You'll find a wide array of dolls, from individual figures to complete sets like the Dasavatharam set, cricket sets, and marriage sets. The price range is extensive, catering to different budgets, from affordable small dolls to more expensive, elaborate collections. Reddit

However, it's important to manage expectations. Some reviews suggest that the 'collection' might be limited in certain homes, and the overall business structure is somewhat unorganized. Visitors have also pointed out that the prices in Vilachery can be higher than what you might find in retail street shops in larger cities like Chennai, partly due to the cost of raw materials. This makes it advisable to explore multiple homes and compare offerings before making a purchase. Reddit

Despite these points, the charm of buying directly from the creators is undeniable. It offers a chance to connect with the artisans, understand the value of their work, and take home a piece of authentic Indian craftsmanship. If you're looking for a unique souvenir and an immersive cultural experience, Vilachery is a worthwhile destination. Reddit
