Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the unique blue stones and black sand of Blue Stone Beach, often describing it as a geological wonder. The scenic views, including the Ebulobo volcano, are frequently praised. Some concerns are raised about the collection of stones by locals, though the beach's vastness and geological origins are noted. The presence of a convenient seafood restaurant is also a plus.
"Before you pick up your pitchforks, I would say that a lot of reviewers are misunderstood! The blue stones are not being harvested from the beach and the the blue stone beach won't be gone anytime soon!
1) What are the blue stones?
- The stones are mineral rocks formed by volcanic activities, they're part of a ground layer around the area. As evident by the cliff mines along the road. They get their signature blue hue from being eroded by the weather and waves. That's why you see them exposed on the cliffs and placed openly along the road.
2) Are they stealing and selling the rocks?
- More like mining and selling the rocks. The beach isn't going to disappear soon. The rocks you see along the road are from the cliff mines, not stolen from the beach.
The beach itself is nice, the waves were huge when I visited so its unsafe to go down. There's a nice seafood restaurant with pretty fair prices, a good spot to stop for lunch."

"There are no more blue stones left as they are stolen by locals to be sold. They packed it up to be sold at the road side when cars drove past. It is just destroying the beach. But of course, there are plenty of rocks from the hills beside. The stones are beautiful but they are used by locals as decorations in their gardens and house."

"Our driver stopped at a restaurant by the beach for lunch. The color of the stone is unique. We see many locals collect stone to sell along the road."

The Geology of Blue Stone Beach
The presence of the Ebulobo volcano in the background further emphasizes the volcanic origins of the area. This geological backdrop adds to the dramatic beauty of the beach. While some concerns have been raised about the collection of these stones, it's important to understand that the stones are part of a larger geological formation. Locals have been mining and selling these stones for a long time, and while it impacts the immediate shoreline, the geological processes continue to replenish the supply.
Visiting Blue Stone Beach offers a unique opportunity to witness these geological wonders firsthand. It's a chance to appreciate the raw power of nature and the beauty that can emerge from volcanic landscapes. The beach serves as a living testament to the dynamic geological history of Flores Island.
Local Culture and Stone Collection
While the collection of stones is a vital part of the local livelihood, it has also led to discussions about sustainability and the preservation of the beach's natural state. Some visitors have noted that large quantities of stones are being sold, leading to concerns about depletion. However, as mentioned, the stones are part of a larger geological deposit, and the mining activities are concentrated in specific areas, often from the cliffs rather than solely from the beach itself.

It's a reminder that tourism and local traditions can coexist, albeit with careful consideration for the environment.
