What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Broken Beach is lauded for its breathtaking natural beauty, particularly its iconic rock arch and vibrant turquoise cove. Visitors are captivated by the unique geological formations and stunning photo opportunities. While swimming isn't possible, the views are considered well worth the trip, though the rough roads and potential crowds are noted drawbacks.
"Broken Beach is one of the most unique and breathtaking sights in Nusa Penida. The natural arch and turquoise water inside the cove make it look like something out of a postcard. It’s not a place where you can swim, but the view alone makes it worth the visit. Walking around the cliffs gives you different angles of the bay, and every spot feels picture-perfect.
It does get busy with tour groups during the day, so going earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon gives you a much quieter experience. Even with the crowds, it’s still one of the most striking natural landmarks on the island and definitely a must-see.
Pairing it with nearby Angel’s Billabong makes for a great stop on a Nusa Penida trip."

"Absolutely beautiful! The natural arch and turquoise waters make the scenery look straight out of a postcard. People often spot manta rays here — maybe we were just the unlucky ones this time 😅 — but honestly, the breathtaking views totally made up for it.
Whether you're into photography or just want to sit and admire nature’s beauty, this place is a must-visit. Peaceful, unique, and unforgettable. 🌴✨"

"A truly unique and breathtaking natural wonder! Broken Beach is famous for its stunning rock arch and circular cove where the ocean flows in through a natural tunnel. The view from above is absolutely spectacular, with dramatic cliffs and turquoise water creating the perfect photo opportunity.
Although you can’t go down to the beach itself, the surrounding landscape is incredible to explore on foot. It’s also just a short walk from Angel’s Billabong, making it easy to visit both spots in one trip. Definitely one of the must-see highlights of Nusa Penida!"

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While kids might not be able to swim, the sheer scale and unique landscape can be fascinating. Consider combining the visit with Angel's Billabong if conditions are safe for a brief paddle, but prioritize safety above all. The bumpy ride to get there might also be an adventure in itself for older children.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
For the best shots, aim for early morning or late afternoon light, which minimizes harsh shadows and enhances the water's color. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the grandeur of the scene. Be patient, as spotting manta rays in the water can add an incredible element to your photos.

The Geology of Broken Beach
The surrounding cliffs are equally impressive, offering breathtaking vantage points. These rugged formations provide a stark contrast to the vibrant turquoise waters below. While you can't descend to the beach itself, walking along the cliff paths allows for diverse perspectives and incredible photo opportunities. The sheer scale and unique formation make it a must-see natural landmark.
It's important to remember that Broken Beach is a viewpoint, not a swimming destination. The currents can be strong, and the rocky seabed makes it unsafe for swimming. The beauty lies in observing the ocean's power from a safe distance and appreciating the unique geological artistry.
Visiting Broken Beach with Angel's Billabong
While Angel's Billabong looks inviting, swimming here requires caution. It's only safe during low tide and when the sea is calm. High tide or rough waves can make the pool dangerous, as the water can surge over the edges unexpectedly. Always heed local advice and observe the conditions before considering a dip.
Visiting both sites in one trip is highly recommended for a comprehensive Nusa Penida experience. They offer distinct yet complementary natural wonders. Plan your visit to coincide with low tide for the best experience at Angel's Billabong, and enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery of Broken Beach.
Safety and Responsible Tourism
It's crucial to respect the natural environment and your own safety. Stick to designated paths and viewpoints. Avoid venturing too close to the cliff edges, and never attempt risky poses for photos. Remember that the primary purpose of visiting is to admire the natural wonder, not to put yourself in danger.
Responsible tourism also means being mindful of the local community and environment. Pay any entrance fees, dispose of your trash properly, and be respectful of local customs. By prioritizing safety and responsible practices, you can ensure a memorable and positive experience at Broken Beach.
