Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Gunung Leuser National Park for its breathtaking jungle scenery and incredible wildlife, especially the chance to see orangutans in their natural habitat. The immersive trekking experience and the opportunity to connect with nature are highlights, though some note the challenging terrain and the need for proper preparation. Occasional mentions of government corruption and park maintenance are present but don't overshadow the overall positive sentiment.

"An absolutely breathtaking jungle - just like stepping into The Jungle Book. You’ll find fascinating plants you’ve probably never seen before, like rattan, and of course an impressive wildlife: the true stars are the orangutans, but also long-tailed macaques unique to Sumatra, bamboo pit vipers, and giant insects.

Important tip: go into the jungle at sunrise. Before the crowds arrive, you’ll actually experience the magic of nature. Once the noisy groups come in, most animals hide - except for a few overfed, aggressive macaques that stick around.

Pro tip: hot pants, a crop top and flip-flops might be enough if you just want a “vine swing” photo for social media from the jungle - but they won’t do much for exploring orangutans and venomous snakes 😂"

"During our trip through Indonesia, we made a spontaneous stop in Bukit Lawang to trek through the incredible Gunung Leuser National Park, home to some of the last remaining wild orangutans. The experience far exceeded our expectations!

We embarked on a 3-day, 2-night jungle trek, and it was a truly unforgettable adventure. The dense, vibrant jungle provided the perfect backdrop as we set out to explore the wildlife-rich environment. Throughout the trek, we were fortunate enough to encounter eight orangutans, including mothers with babies, which was a once-in-a-lifetime sight. We also spotted Thomas leaf monkeys, short- and pig-tailed macaques, a striking hornbill bird, and countless fascinating insects. The diversity of wildlife in the park is simply breathtaking.

As avid photographers, we took our time capturing the natural beauty of the park. The serene jungle atmosphere allowed us to immerse ourselves fully to catch the animals in action and getting the perfect shots.

In the evenings, we camped in the jungle, surrounded by nature. At the campsites we were provided with plenty of food and drink.

Gunung Leuser National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers and anyone who wants an authentic, immersive jungle experience. The opportunity to see such a diverse array of wildlife in their natural habitat, especially the orangutans, was an experience we’ll cherish forever. We highly recommend exploring this incredible national park!"

"Fantastic Jungle-experience with Orang Utans and other Wildlife. I did a 3-day tour. Make sure to pack water purification tablets and good (hiking) shoes! Trekking agencies probably wont tell you that some people get food poisoning and that trails can become very steep and are full of roots."
