"While the ability to see the blue flame phenomenon is pretty spectacular, as are the views from above the crater, the descend to the crater is outright dangerous. Not just because it's steep, slippery and narrow, but first and foremost because of the amount of people there.
They open the gates at 2 a.m. and even if you start exactly then, you have to be able to maintain very good pace to see the flames and then the sunrise up top. But the way some people absolutely disregard safety just get there as fast as possible is astonishing. We were trying to be very careful while going down and the amount of absolute idiots trying to push their way by you makes the descent a horrible experience. Buddy, there's a hundred people in front of us, you won't be there first... and even as we were going up, there were still hundreds going down still even if they had no chance of seeing the flame anymore (you can't see it unless it's dark).
As some other commenters have said here, they should 100% limit the amount of tickets being sold. I would add having a guide with you be absolutely mandatory."

"To witness the iconic blue flames at Ijen Crater, you’ll need to begin the trek by 1:00 AM. The trail becomes steep and challenging just a few meters in, with a noticeable increase in inclination as you progress.
Once you reach the top, the journey isn’t over—you’ll need to descend about 1 km into the crater to view the blue flames and the sulphur lake. This descent is narrow, slippery, and crowded, so exercise extreme caution.
The sulphur fumes emitted from the volcano are very intense and can cause severe breathing issues, coughing, and cold symptoms if inhaled. It is absolutely essential to wear a proper mining-grade gas mask and protective goggles throughout the trek. Do not remove the mask at any point, even for photos."

"A beautiful hike in the night with a starry night sky, and once you reach the flames it’s a unique visual. The walk down the crater is a bit time consuming and hard enough because the descent is very slippery and full of rocks. Better to take good grip shoes for the trek.
But due to overcrowding sometimes safety is compromised, people try to rush a lot sometimes, but at the flames for the sake of pictures it’s very difficult, even the fumes keep going in your eyes and it irritates your eyes for a while, best thing is to close your eyes at that time.
