What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Labuan Bajo is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, from the iconic Padar Island viewpoint to the unique Pink Beach and the chance to swim with manta rays. The sailing trips through Komodo National Park are a major highlight, offering an unforgettable adventure. However, some visitors note issues with waste management on local islands and can find the town itself less developed than other tourist hubs.
"PULAU KUKUSAN (Indonesia)
Those visiting Labuan Bajo on Flores, should consider hiring a pump boat and heading out to explore some of the islands within an hour or two of port.
We did just that on a particularly calm day; packing SUPs and snorkel gear to facilitate play.
We dropped in to the small fishing village clinging to the steep sides of Pulau Kukusan. Apart from the infants who were terrified by my white skin - the community made us feel most welcome.
Like most islands, there was trash on the beach and scattered on the dusty laneways between stilt houses, but we later learned that there is no municipal collection of waste.
So what to do?
Burn it? Prohibited apparently these days.
Bury is? There’s not enough land on the island to enable this.
Dump it into the sea? That too is illegal.
Leave it to blow away? Rats have to be kept in check by starting cats as disease is caused by the pests that trash attract.
As the locals will readily say: ‘what are we to do? We can’t let our children get sick, so we have no choice but to dump it into the sea.’
Thankfully, there looks to be an innovative solution on the horizon. A new service - using confiscated fishing boats - that will collect the waste from each island for proper disposal at Labuan Bajo.
It can’t come a moment to soon for the villagers and the marine life.
BYO food."
