What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Many visitors describe swimming with manta rays at Manta Bay as a spectacular and unforgettable highlight of their Bali trip, praising the majestic creatures and vibrant marine life. However, some find the experience overcrowded with numerous boats, leading to a less peaceful encounter. Guides are often commended for their expertise and ensuring safety.
"We really wanted this experience and were looking forward to it, I was a little worried that we would lose it because of the weather and the waves, but in the end everything was safe and we could go... we were lucky to see and swim with at least one manta (there wasn't one the day before) and we were able to enjoy it... the manta is a beautiful, large and peaceful animal... I felt a little sorry for her as sometimes people would chase her around to take a picture, but she always took more of it and swam a little bit for everyone... moments like that are unforgettable 👍"

"Worst place to be in the world. It’s extremely overcrowded. We went there with a tour (like all the other 100 tourist) because we didn’t want to spend to much money going diving. That was a wrong move. We should have done the diving. Like I said, there are 20 boats like you in the same bay trying to find the one manta that is trying to swim there. There are sadly always 5 out of the 100 tourist that do not care about rules and try to touch the manta. Seriously if you want to see mantas and actually enjoy the experience instead of having to swim very quickly to get a glimpse just go diving. It’s more expensive but you will at least see them in peace."

"This snorkeling tour included 4 bay (Manta, bay, Wall bay, Crystal bay,, Gamat Bay. We saw Manta Ray, colorful fish/reef, sea turtle, etc."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most common way is to take a fast boat from Sanur Harbor in Bali to Nusa Penida. From the harbor on Nusa Penida, you'll typically join a pre-booked tour or hire a local driver to take you to Manta Bay or Manta Point.
Many travelers and guides suggest Manta Point offers a higher chance of seeing manta rays, though the boat ride can be rougher. Manta Bay is more accessible but can get very crowded.
Hiring a private driver or joining a guided tour is recommended for navigating Nusa Penida's roads, which can be challenging. Some tours include transport from your accommodation.
The fast boat from Bali to Nusa Penida takes about 30-45 minutes. Add travel time on Nusa Penida to reach the bay, usually another 30-60 minutes depending on your starting point and road conditions.
Yes, shared boat tours are available and are a more budget-friendly option. However, they can be more crowded, and the experience might be less personalized.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Snorkeling tours vary in price. Shared tours can range from 150k IDR for Manta Bay only, while combined tours including Manta Point and other spots might cost around 350k IDR or more. Private tours will be significantly higher.
It's highly recommended to book your tour in advance, especially during peak season, to secure your spot and ensure a smooth experience.
Most tours include boat transport, snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins), and sometimes a guide. Some packages may also include lunch and hotel pickup/drop-off.
While there isn't a specific entrance fee for Manta Bay itself, the cost is typically bundled into the tour price. Some areas on Nusa Penida might have small local fees.
Tours generally operate during daylight hours, with early morning departures being the most popular to catch the mantas and avoid crowds.
🎫 🐠 Onsite Experience
Early mornings, ideally before 8:30 AM, are considered the best time for sightings and to avoid the largest crowds.
You can expect to see majestic manta rays, vibrant marine life, and potentially other sea creatures. The water can be choppy, and currents can be strong.
Manta Bay is generally suitable for beginners, but conditions can be challenging due to currents. Manta Point is often considered more advanced due to rougher seas.
Many tours provide swim tires or flotation devices for less confident swimmers. It's advisable to inform your guide of any physical restrictions.
Besides manta rays, you can spot colorful reef fish, sea turtles, and other diverse marine species in the clear waters.
📸 📸 Photography
Yes, many tours offer professional photo and video services, or you can hire a private guide who specializes in underwater documentation.
Hiring a guide with a good camera setup or using a waterproof action camera is recommended. Be mindful of the mantas and avoid chasing them for a shot.
Drone usage might be restricted in certain areas or by tour operators. It's best to check with your tour provider beforehand.
Absolutely! Bringing your own waterproof camera or action camera is a great way to capture your personal memories of swimming with manta rays.
Underwater lighting can vary depending on the time of day and water clarity. Early mornings often offer good light, but overcast days can reduce visibility.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
It's also wise to book a tour with a guide who is experienced with children and can ensure their safety and enjoyment. Some tours offer a more relaxed pace and can accommodate shorter snorkeling times if needed. Discuss any concerns about seasickness or swimming abilities with your tour provider beforehand. The sheer wonder of seeing these gentle giants can create lasting memories for the whole family.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save further, consider booking your tour upon arrival in Nusa Penida, as some local operators might offer last-minute deals. However, booking in advance, especially during peak season, is advisable to secure a spot and avoid disappointment. Pack your own snacks and water to avoid purchasing them at inflated prices on tours or at the harbor. Remember that while shared tours are cheaper, investing in a slightly more comprehensive tour that includes Manta Point might be worth it for a better chance at sightings.

Navigating Manta Point vs. Manta Bay
Manta Bay, on the other hand, is generally more accessible and offers calmer waters, making it a popular choice for beginner snorkelers and those seeking a less intense journey. While sightings are still possible, some visitors note that Manta Bay can become extremely crowded with numerous tour boats, potentially diminishing the serene experience of swimming with mantas. Many tours aim to visit both locations to maximize the chances of a memorable encounter.
To make the most of your visit, consider booking an early morning tour, ideally departing around 7 AM, to arrive at Manta Point before the majority of boats. This strategy not only increases your chances of seeing mantas but also allows for a more peaceful experience with fewer fellow travelers. Some travelers also recommend opting for a private guide or tour for better documentation and a more personalized interaction with the marine life.
Maximizing Your Manta Ray Encounter
Choosing the right tour operator and guide can significantly impact your experience. Look for companies that emphasize responsible tourism and have knowledgeable guides who can spot the mantas and ensure your safety. Some guides are even equipped to provide excellent underwater photography and videography, capturing your magical moments without you needing to worry about your own equipment. If you're concerned about the rough seas, communicate this with your tour provider; some may offer swim tires or alternative routes.
Remember that while sightings are common, they are not guaranteed. Some visitors have unfortunately not seen mantas due to weather or natural variations in their behavior. However, even without a manta sighting, the beauty of Nusa Penida's waters and the surrounding scenery can still make for a worthwhile trip. Respect the marine life by never touching the mantas, allowing them to swim freely and gracefully.
