What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mawi Beach is praised for its stunning natural beauty, excellent surf breaks, and peaceful atmosphere, offering a tranquil escape from busier tourist spots. While the challenging road access is a deterrent for some, it contributes to the beach's serene charm. Visitors appreciate the minimal vendor presence and the breathtaking sunset views.
"The beach was super, it's quiet, no one is offering to sell you anything or services, best is probably just asking if you'd like anything to eat/drink and that's it.
The sunbed rent is 100k for both. And yes you pay once so its for the whole day.
The drive itself, I recommend you use a motorbike, and make sure you're a good driver, because as locals even we have some trouble going up and down the hill.
The locals will stop you at the entrance and you have to pay Rp5000 to them (for road construction they said), so just do it, if you dont, they'll stop you on the way back anyway😂
On the way you'll meet these very gentle animals, the cows and the bulls :) I like them so I stopped to take pictures of them, no touching though."

"One of the beautiful beaches in lombok where you can swim and surf. The beach is big and has a large amount of sand place. There are not many sunbeds which makes this beach even more beautiful. Amazing for sunsets!!"

"After paying 10k for entry and parking, we scootered down some rough terrain until arriving at the beach which had a small warung, surfboard rental, sunbeds and was full of instagram backpackers. Not really our vibe, so we decided to walk over the hill to a different beach where we were pretty much the only ones there and it was magic"

The Surfer's Haven: Riding the Waves at Mawi
For those new to reef breaks, it's advisable to either have prior experience or consider hiring a local surf guide. While Mawi is a surfer's dream, it's important to be aware of the conditions and your own skill level. The challenging access also means that the crowds are generally smaller than at more easily accessible surf spots, allowing for more wave time.
Beyond the main break, the surrounding coastline may offer other surf possibilities depending on the tide and swell direction. Many visitors come specifically for the surf experience, making Mawi a key destination on the Lombok surf circuit.
Beyond the Waves: Mawi's Tranquil Charm
The stunning natural scenery is a major draw. Dramatic green hills cascade down to meet the turquoise waters, creating a picturesque backdrop. This makes Mawi an ideal location for photography, especially during the magical sunset hours. The way the light transforms the landscape is truly breathtaking, offering a different kind of thrill for visitors.
Visitors can rent sunbeds for a full day of relaxation, and the gentle waves are suitable for swimming, though caution is always advised. The overall vibe is one of tranquility and natural beauty, making it a perfect spot to unwind and disconnect.
The Adventurous Journey to Mawi Beach
Locals often collect a small entrance fee (around Rp 5,000) for road maintenance. While it might seem like an extra cost, it contributes to keeping the access road somewhat passable. It's essential to be a confident and experienced motorbike rider to navigate these conditions safely. The rough terrain acts as a natural deterrent, helping to preserve the beach's peaceful atmosphere.
Some visitors have described the drive as an 'adventure,' and indeed, it is. The effort required to get there is often rewarded with a less crowded and more pristine beach experience. For those who prefer not to brave the roads themselves, hiring a local driver with a suitable vehicle might be an option, though less common.
