What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Misool is overwhelmingly praised as a pristine paradise, particularly for its unparalleled marine biodiversity and stunning karst landscapes. Visitors highlight the incredible diving and snorkeling, the unique Jellyfish Lake, and the overall sense of remote natural beauty. Some find the journey challenging and the costs high, but most agree the experience is worth it.
"Snorkel Venture tour of Raja Ampat with tour guide Sabine Templeton. Sabine possesses a child-like wonder, awe, and enthusiasm for the marine environment, and nature, in general. She carries out her responsibilities with aplomb, ensuring everyone in her group is safe, secure, and informed. And she is very social, making everyone feel welcome, considered, and respected. Putting these skills and talents together delivers a leader that's not just good, but truly phenomenal. Sabine is the best tour director I have ever encountered.
My favorite moment was snorkeling with the mantas, where we saw over 20 manta and devil rays. The house reef at Misool, the mangrove snorkel near Gam and the soft "candy" coral in the Misool area were all spectacular highlights for me.
I look forward to our next trip with Sabine."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
You'll need to fly from Jakarta to Sorong (SOQ) via a connecting flight, usually through Makassar or another major Indonesian city. From Sorong, you'll typically take a ferry or a speedboat to Misool, or arrange a transfer through your resort or liveaboard. The journey can be long, so factor in travel time.
Most travel within Misool is done by boat. Resorts and liveaboards provide boat transfers for diving and excursions. For independent exploration, hiring a local boat is an option, but pre-booking is recommended.
While there are public ferries to some parts of Raja Ampat, reaching Misool often requires more specialized transport like speedboats or private charters arranged through tour operators or accommodations due to its remote location.
The total travel time can vary significantly, but expect at least a full day of travel from Jakarta to Sorong, followed by several hours by boat to reach Misool. Plan for at least two travel days to get there and back.
No, there are no airports directly on Misool Island. The nearest major airport is in Sorong (SOQ), which serves as the gateway to the Raja Ampat archipelago.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Yes, a Raja Ampat Conservation Permit (PIN) is required for all visitors to the Raja Ampat area, including Misool. This permit helps fund conservation efforts. You can usually purchase it upon arrival or through your accommodation.
Costs vary greatly depending on your accommodation (resort vs. liveaboard), duration, and activities. Expect to pay for flights to Sorong, the conservation permit, and your chosen lodging and diving packages. Budget travelers might find it challenging due to the remoteness.
While the conservation permit covers general access, some specific sites might have small local fees or require a guide, which would be an additional cost. Always check with your tour operator or resort.
It's highly recommended to book your accommodation and dive packages well in advance, as Misool is remote and options can be limited. While permits can sometimes be bought on arrival, pre-booking ensures a smoother experience.
Many travelers opt for liveaboard boats or dedicated dive resorts. Booking through reputable dive operators or travel agencies specializing in Raja Ampat is advisable for a well-organized trip.

While seafood is abundant, many resorts can accommodate vegetarian or vegan requests if informed in advance. It's best to communicate your dietary needs when booking.
Dining costs are generally included in resort or liveaboard packages. If you're on a budget and not on a package, food can be more expensive due to the remoteness and transport costs of supplies.

Misool offers stunning landscapes, from the iconic karst islands and turquoise lagoons to the vibrant underwater world. The Jellyfish Lake and panoramic viewpoints from the karst hills are also incredible photo spots.
While any waterproof camera or action cam can capture great underwater shots, a dedicated underwater camera setup or a good housing for your DSLR/mirrorless camera will yield the best results for capturing the rich marine biodiversity.
Golden hours, just after sunrise and before sunset, offer the most dramatic lighting for landscape photography, highlighting the lush green islands and clear waters. Midday can be harsh but good for capturing the vibrant blues.
Some specialized dive operators or photography tour companies may offer trips focused on capturing the beauty of Raja Ampat, including Misool. It's worth researching dedicated photography expeditions.
The remoteness means limited access to equipment repair or specialized gear. Weather can also be a factor, with potential for rain. Protecting your gear from salt and humidity is crucial.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
It's important to manage expectations regarding amenities and connectivity; Misool is about embracing nature. Liveaboard diving is highly recommended for serious divers, as it allows access to the most remote and pristine dive sites, maximizing your underwater exploration time. Many dive operators offer specialized Misool itineraries. Be prepared for potentially strong currents on some sites, and always dive within your certification limits. The house reef at Misool is also renowned for its abundance of life, offering excellent diving right from your accommodation.

The Marine Marvels of Misool
Divers rave about the house reef at Misool and the 'candy' soft corals found in the area, describing them as truly spectacular highlights. The sheer density and variety of marine life are breathtaking. Beyond the larger pelagics, expect to encounter countless species of reef fish, nudibranchs, and other fascinating invertebrates. Conservation efforts are paramount here, and visitors are urged to practice responsible tourism to help preserve this natural wonder for generations to come.
For those who prefer to stay closer to the surface, snorkeling in Misool is equally rewarding. The shallow reefs are teeming with life, and even a casual snorkel can reveal a kaleidoscope of colors and fascinating creatures. The mangrove snorkel near Gam is another unique experience, showcasing a different but equally vital marine habitat. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a curious snorkeler, Misool's underwater world promises an unforgettable adventure.
Navigating the Karst Landscapes
A must-do for many is the trek to the Jellyfish Lake, a truly unique natural phenomenon. The climb to reach the lake can be challenging, involving slippery, loose rocks, but the reward is immense. Inside the lake, you can swim amongst thousands of non-stinging jellyfish, a surreal and unforgettable experience. The panoramic views from the ridge leading into the lake are also spectacular, offering a classic 'Raja Ampat style' vista.
Beyond specific attractions, simply cruising through the archipelago by boat offers constant visual delights. The contrast between the lush green vegetation clinging to the karst formations and the vibrant blue of the sea is striking. Many visitors describe the journey itself as a highlight, with new, stunning vistas around every corner.
Planning Your Misool Expedition
Accommodation options in Misool primarily consist of dive resorts and liveaboard boats. Liveaboards offer the advantage of covering more dive sites and experiencing different areas of the archipelago, while resorts provide a more stationary base with access to local dive spots and island excursions. Both options typically include meals and guided activities, catering to a comfortable yet adventurous experience. It's important to note that Misool is not a budget destination; the remoteness and specialized nature of travel contribute to higher costs.
Connectivity is minimal, with limited Wi-Fi and phone signal, making Misool an ideal destination for a digital detox. Visitors are advised to pack light but smart, bringing essentials like reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and quick-drying clothing, as amenities are scarce. The focus here is on immersing oneself in nature and disconnecting from the everyday hustle.
