What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Bromo offers an awe-inspiring experience, with the sunrise over the volcanic landscape being a major highlight. Visitors praise the grand views and the unique 'Sea of Sand' terrain. However, some find the cold temperatures and the crowds, especially during peak times, to be drawbacks.
"Awesome experience!
Waiting the sunset to see the bromo mount is one of the best things I could do.
Really recommend!!
It’s a bit cold to the top specially before the sunset, take care to have a jacket."

"Would recommend doing it in the afternoon around 2-3 pm, we used the villagers’ path to avoid the park entrance fee.
The hike down the path was slightly slopey, but once you reach the sea of sand it is all flat and sandy it’s a fairly easy walk."
Korrine Koh
"If you are in Surabaya, you must climb Bromo. Best to go for a sunrise hike. The mountains and the view from the vantage point is incredible. It's such an amazing mountain with incredible folklore. This is a sacred mountain so please do not litter (there were a lot in the surroundings). There is also an altar of Ganesha where you can make offerings. There are also plenty of peddlers selling snacks and drinks.
The climb is actually easy for physically fit people. But do note that there is a steep staircase climb to reach the mouth of the volcano. Alternatively, you may opt to rent a horse ride. In all, it's a must visit place."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most common way is to book a tour from Surabaya, which usually includes transportation via private car or shared van. Alternatively, you can take a train to Probolinggo or Malang and then arrange local transport (ojek or shared jeep) to Cemoro Lawang, the main village near Bromo. Tours often depart very early in the morning.
While possible, a day trip from Surabaya is very rushed, often involving a 3 AM departure to catch the sunrise. Many recommend staying overnight in Cemoro Lawang for a more relaxed experience and to fully appreciate the landscape.
Jeeps are the primary mode of transport for tourists to reach viewpoints and the Sea of Sand. You can rent them through local tour operators or your accommodation. Horses are also available for hire to cross the Sea of Sand.
Private vehicles can typically only go up to a certain point, after which you'll need to switch to a 4x4 jeep to navigate the sandy terrain and reach the viewpoints.
Mount Bromo is approximately a 2-3 hour drive from Malang, depending on traffic and the specific route taken. Many tours also depart from Malang.

Sunrise is undoubtedly the most iconic time for photography, offering dramatic light and cloud formations. The 'golden hour' before and after sunrise, as well as sunset, also provide beautiful lighting.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast landscapes. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details of the volcano. A sturdy tripod is recommended for low-light sunrise shots. Don't forget extra batteries as it can get cold.
Yes, the Sea of Sand offers a unique, stark landscape for photography. Teletubbies Hill provides a contrasting green backdrop. The volcanic smoke from the crater can also create dramatic effects.
Include people or the jeep in your shots to give a sense of scale against the vast volcanic landscape. Shooting from a lower angle can also emphasize the grandeur of the mountains.
