What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Pasar Tengah is a dynamic market offering a dual experience: a bustling traditional bazaar by day and a vibrant street food haven by night. Visitors appreciate its historical charm, wide variety of goods, and affordable culinary delights. However, some find the market can be crowded and occasionally pungent due to its traditional nature.
"As oldest market, this renewable market still offer wide variety stuffs. From flea used clothes, gears, engine, knives, bumper to traditional salted fish. On some corners you'll meet odors either from the ditch across or from the chicken coop sale for the meat. Talk about used stuffs, you can find anything here. Literally anything."

"This used to be the main market in the city centre, where you could shop for meat, fish, vegies to clothing and shoes. People from remote areas would flock to central market either by their sampans/boats (cause it's by the Kapuas river) or trucks and filled them up with goods for resale. Nowadays, it has become somewhat less crowded because the local govt built new markets all across town. Recently after a big fire, the govt built newer blocks of building for the merchants and hawkers here. Unfortunately, people prefer to hawk their goods by the street. The area is now filled with these street hawkers and shops that do not do retail. The market is walkable if u don't mind the crowd. Interestingly, some of the shops are built durinfg Dutch occupation and of u search hard enough, some shops still has chinese character written on its walls."

The Dual Life of Pasar Tengah
As dusk settles, Pasar Tengah undergoes a magical transformation. The same space that bustled with daytime shoppers morphs into a vibrant night market, a popular culinary destination. This nocturnal avatar is characterized by rows of food stalls offering a tempting array of local street food. Think grilled meats, savory snacks, sweet treats, and refreshing drinks, all served in a lively, open-air setting. This dual nature makes Pasar Tengah a dynamic attraction, offering different experiences depending on the time of day.
This transformation is not just about changing vendors; it's a shift in atmosphere and purpose. The daytime market caters to practical needs, while the night market is about leisure, socializing, and indulging in local flavors. The government's efforts to revitalize the area have enhanced this culinary aspect, creating a 'tempo dulu' (old-fashioned) ambiance that draws both locals and visitors.
A Glimpse into Pontianak's History
Many of the shops and structures within Pasar Tengah bear the marks of its long history, with some dating back to the Dutch colonial era. The presence of Chinese characters on some walls is a testament to the long-standing Chinese influence and trade in the region. The market was once the primary commercial center, attracting people from remote areas who would arrive by boat or truck to trade goods.
Although newer markets have emerged, Pasar Tengah retains its unique character. Exploring Pasar Tengah offers a chance to connect with the city's past, observing how commerce and daily life have evolved over time.
The Sensory Experience of Pasar Tengah
The sounds are equally captivating – the calls of vendors, the chatter of shoppers, the sizzle of food being cooked, and the general hum of a busy marketplace. It’s a symphony of urban life that is both exhilarating and authentic.
And then there are the smells. Pasar Tengah is known for its distinct aromas, which can range from the fresh scent of produce and spices to the more pungent odors associated with traditional markets, such as fish and live poultry. While some might find these smells intense, they are an integral part of the authentic market experience, telling the story of the goods being traded. The night market, of course, is dominated by the mouth-watering aromas of street food.
