Reviews Summary
Toko Oen Malang is a beloved heritage site, praised for its authentic colonial architecture and legendary ice cream. However, some visitors have noted concerns regarding food quality, service consistency, and pricing. It's often recommended to visit for the nostalgic ambiance and a taste of history rather than expecting a modern, high-end dining experience.
"We visited Toko Oen in Malang, hoping to enjoy both its historical charm and its food, but unfortunately, we were very disappointed. I would rate this place 2 out of 5. The food quality was poor and far from tasty, and it did not live up to the expectations for a place of its reputation. The restaurant itself was dirty, and the overall cleanliness left much to be desired.
The staff seemed unmotivated and uninterested in serving customers properly. There was no proper welcome or guidance, and it felt like we had to fend for ourselves. The only redeeming factor is the historical value of the place, which might be interesting for those who appreciate heritage, but otherwise, there are far better dining options outside.
I truly hope the management takes these issues seriously and improves both the service and hygiene. Maintaining cleanliness and having attentive, friendly staff would make a huge difference. Until then, I would only recommend visiting Toko Oen for its history, not for a quality meal."

"I’ll start with the downsides. Finding a parking spot here was a challenge and set the tone for a rather underwhelming experience. When I politely inquired about their payment policy, the owner responded curtly with, “You can read the sign,” which felt unnecessarily dismissive. The nostalgic, old-school theme of the café didn’t translate into comfort—the seating was awkward, and the ambiance fell short of expectations. Service was poor, with a rude waiter who even forgot one of our orders. The dessert, marketed as ice cream, resembled flavored shaved ice and was priced nearly on par with premium brands like Häagen-Dazs, which was disappointing. The only real draw here is the aesthetic—a place to snap photos of a bygone era. Out of all the places I visited during my week in Malang, this was the sole disappointment, and I wouldn’t return even if the meal were free."

"Everything was so nice and good!! I love the rum raisin ice cream and the bratwurst was also very good! Love the ambiance too"
