What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Tulamben Beach is a diver's dream, celebrated for the accessible USAT Liberty shipwreck and rich marine biodiversity. While the rocky shore presents a challenging entry, the underwater spectacle is well worth the effort. It's also a popular spot for affordable dive certifications.
"Great for diving. Liberty shipwreck is just a few meters to your left. Difficult to get in-and out of the water because of the big rocks, but a fabulous dive-site once u get there. Not a beach for sunbathing, there's no nice white sand area."
N van der zanden
"Very nice beach for snorkeling and dive. 🤿 you can find variety of things under water from different corals, fishes, …
The dive will be shore diving something different I experienced."

"Survival Guide:
PARKING: apparently is 20k, but nobody asked me. So maybe you'll be lucky too. Either way, it's worth it.
SNORKELING GUIDE: you WILL be approached by people who want to be your guide. Tell them "no". It can happen they won't listen. Tell them you have a diving course already.
DIVING GUIDE: You don't have to pre book because you'll find plenty here. But since you're reading this, apparently you're the gal or guy who's into preparing themselves. So, best, get a reputable teacher on google maps.
ENTER THE WATER ON YOUR OWN: there's no need for a guide. Guides will lie to you and say you can't go snorkeling alone. You absolutely can. And if you're a decent swimmer, nothing is stopping you.
LOCATION OF THE SHIP: it's 120 meters long, and it's 25-50 meters outside of the shoreline. It's aligned to the shore line, so you cannot miss it. The pin on google map is accurate. Just go exploring and have fun.
TIDE: it's easier to enter the water at high tide. There are many rocks. But any tide should be fine. I was there at high tide which was good. Download the app nautide, it's free and gives you the information you need.
TIME OF THE DAY: if you want to have the ship for your own, go before 9. Other than that, any time is fine. I liked the other divers and snorklers as orientation.
FINS: Yes, you'll be better off with fins. The current can be strong and the rocks can be annoying. But they are not sharp. Still. Fins are heavily recommend. You should be able to rent them there.
SHOPS: the warung there has increased prices. A coke is 20k. Still affordable, but more expensive then other warungs.
Consider liking this guide for visibility."

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The beach is rocky, so wearing water shoes is highly recommended. Entering during high tide can make it easier. Be prepared for a shore entry rather than a sandy walk-in.
While you can swim, Tulamben is primarily known for diving and snorkeling due to the rocky entry and proximity to the shipwreck. It's not a typical sunbathing or swimming beach.
You can expect to see a wide variety of reef fish, corals, and potentially larger pelagics around the shipwreck. It's a vibrant ecosystem.
The shipwreck is located about 25-50 meters from the shoreline, making it an accessible shore dive for certified divers.
Bring your swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, and a waterproof camera if you have one. Plenty of water and snacks are also a good idea.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Yes, there are several warungs (local eateries) and small restaurants along the coast in Tulamben, offering local Indonesian dishes.
Food prices at the warungs are generally affordable, though some visitors note that prices at beachside warungs can be slightly higher than in other areas. A coke might cost around 20k IDR.
While Indonesian cuisine often features vegetarian options like nasi goreng or mie goreng, it's best to ask at the warungs about specific ingredients if you have dietary restrictions.
Eating at the beachside warungs offers a scenic experience. They serve local dishes and are convenient for a meal after diving or snorkeling.
You'll find small cafes and warungs that serve coffee, tea, and snacks. They are perfect for a refreshing break between dives or while enjoying the beach view.

Diving the USAT Liberty Shipwreck
For those without a diving certification, Discover Scuba Diving programs are widely available. These introductory courses allow you to experience the thrill of diving under the direct supervision of an instructor, often exploring the shallower parts of the wreck or the nearby coral gardens. The shipwreck is aligned parallel to the shore, making it relatively easy to navigate once you're underwater. Remember to check the tide and consider using fins for easier movement against any currents.
Navigating Tulamben's Rocky Shores
Many visitors recommend entering the water during high tide as it can make the process smoother by covering more of the rocks. While guides might suggest they are necessary for safe entry, experienced swimmers and divers often find they can manage independently. The use of fins is also highly recommended, not just for swimming efficiency but also to help navigate the rocky areas and any potential currents. The beach itself isn't ideal for lounging or sunbathing due to the rocks, so the focus here is squarely on the underwater experience.
Affordable Diving and Certification
Beyond certification, the cost of fun dives (for certified divers) is also relatively affordable compared to many other dive destinations. Equipment rental is readily available, and the shore-diving nature of the main sites means you can often dive on your own schedule. The accessibility of the USAT Liberty shipwreck and the vibrant marine life make it an excellent value proposition for divers of all levels.
