Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Arg-e Karim Khan for its historical grandeur and vibrant atmosphere, especially during evenings when street musicians and local life create a lively scene. The fragrant courtyard and the beautifully decorated bathhouse are notable highlights. While the museum collection is small, the overall experience offers a fascinating glimpse into Shiraz's Zand era.
"The Karim Khan Citadel (Arg-e Karimkhani) is one of the liveliest and most vibrant places in Shiraz. Crowds gather around its ancient walls. Roma fortune tellers sit by the citadel offering palm readings, while street musicians play their instruments. Tourists come and go: some entering the fortress, others just leaving, and many sit on the benches behind the citadel, enjoying a bowl of traditional Shirazi faloodeh.
Sometimes you hear the sound of drums and horns coming from Lotf Ali Khan Zand Street, and at times the music blends beautifully with the instruments being played nearby.
The interior of the citadel is just as charming. there is a garden courtyard at the center, and if you visit in the second or third week of April, the scent of orange blossoms will intoxicate you. Traditional Persian music, especially Shajarian’s voice, can be heard playing softly through the speakers.
The citadel also houses several small museums, one of which exhibits Iranian handicrafts.
Construction of the fortress took place between 1766 and 1767, commissioned by Karim Khan Zand, who employed the finest architects and the best materials, sourced both domestically and internationally, to"

"An impressive citadel with massive brick walls and four tall towers that give a strong sense of history. Inside, the traditional bathhouse with its decorated ceilings is one of the highlights. The gardens and courtyard are pleasant for walking, though the museum collection inside is relatively small compared to the size of the fortress. It can get crowded with tour groups during the day, so mornings are a better time to visit. Overall, a fascinating piece of Shiraz’s history and worth including in your city tour."

History and Significance of Arg-e Karim Khan
Over the centuries, the Arg has served various purposes. It was the royal home and seat of authority during the Zand era, later housing local governors in the Qajar period. Tragically, it was used as a prison during the Pahlavi era, which led to some damage. Recognizing its immense historical value, it was designated a national heritage monument in 1972, prompting extensive restoration efforts to preserve its grandeur.
The citadel's rectangular layout spans approximately 12,000 square meters and is divided into residential and military sections. The residential part features rooms and halls, while the military section includes defensive towers and walls. The four majestic towers, each standing 14 meters tall, not only served a defensive purpose but also enhanced the structure's aesthetic appeal. The interiors are adorned with beautiful tile work, plasterwork, paintings, and sculptures, often depicting floral motifs, hunting scenes, and regal imagery.
Experiencing the Citadel's Atmosphere
The central courtyard is a highlight, particularly in April when the scent of orange blossoms fills the air. Soft traditional Persian music, like the voice of Shajarian, often plays, creating a serene ambiance. This blend of sensory experiences makes the citadel a lively and charming spot, attracting both locals and tourists.
Beyond its historical architecture, the Arg is a social hub. Fortune tellers and street performers add to the lively scene, while visitors can enjoy local treats like faloodeh. Taking a night walk around the citadel reveals its captivating architecture under twinkling lights, making it an enchanting experience that perfectly encapsulates the essence of Shiraz.
