"Lake Urmia is the largest permanent water body in Western Asia.
In 1973, Lake Urmia was registered as Lake Urmia National Park in the list of national parks of Iran. Lake Urmia National Park is considered one of the most important natural habitats for animals in Iran.
42 species of microscopic fungi, 62 species of bacteria and archaebacteria, 311 species of plants, 20 species of algae, 5 species of bivalve mollusks (river islands), 27 reptiles and amphibians, 226 species of birds and 24 species of mammals live in Lake Urmia. In addition, at least 47 species of fossils have been found in this area.
Due to the saltiness of the lake water, no fish live in it. However, Lake Urmia is known as one of the most important habitats for the crustacean "Artemia"."

The Ecological Significance of Lake Urmia
However, the lake has faced severe ecological challenges, primarily due to drought, climate change, and extensive water diversion for agriculture and dams. These factors have led to a dramatic reduction in water levels, increased salinity, and the shrinking of the lake's surface area. This environmental crisis has had profound impacts on the local ecosystem, wildlife, and the communities that depend on the lake. Visiting Lake Urmia offers a poignant opportunity to witness both its natural resilience and the urgent need for conservation efforts.
Understanding this ecological context enhances the visitor experience. It transforms a scenic visit into an educational journey, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the delicate balance of this ecosystem and to practice responsible tourism to help preserve its future.
Wildlife Watching: A Birdwatcher's Haven
Other notable species include pelicans, avocets, storks, and numerous waders. The presence of the Artemia crustacean is directly linked to this abundance of birdlife, as it serves as a primary food source. To make the most of your birdwatching experience, it's highly recommended to bring binoculars or a spotting scope. Early mornings and late afternoons often offer the best opportunities for sightings, as birds are typically more active during these cooler parts of the day.
When exploring, be sure to move quietly and maintain a respectful distance from the wildlife. Designated observation points or hides may be available in some areas, offering excellent viewing opportunities without disturbing the birds. The east shore, with its varied habitats, provides numerous chances to encounter different species. Remember to check local reports for the best areas to spot specific birds during your visit.
