What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art for its world-class collection of modern and contemporary art, featuring masterpieces by global icons and significant Iranian artists. The museum's stunning architecture, a blend of modernist and Persian styles, is also a major highlight. While the limited permanent galleries and reliance on temporary exhibitions can be a drawback for some, the overall experience is considered a cultural revelation and a must-visit for art and architecture enthusiasts.
"This museum stands at the top of the list of the museums to visit while you are in Tehran. Built in 1977 by royal decree to house the collection of contemporary arts in Iran, the museum is a beautiful architectural masterpiece. The exhibitions change from time to time, and, unfortunately, there are no permanent galleries other than the artworks in the open area. When I visited in April 2025, a collection of works by Picasso was on display, and a very thorough work had been done to portray his artwork and the incidents of his life. It is said that this museum has an incredible collection in its warehouse which, unfortunately, has been out of the sight of the public for a very long time."

"I recently visited the Museum of Contemporary Art and had a truly memorable experience. The highlight for me was seeing original works by Picasso — absolutely fascinating and full of energy. The building itself is architecturally stunning and quite unique, which adds so much to the overall atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout the visit. Just keep in mind that food and drinks aren’t allowed inside, which is totally understandable for preserving the artworks. Highly recommend for art lovers and curious minds alike!"

"One of the greatest hidden treasures of modern art in Asia and the Middle East.
The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art holds one of the most extraordinary and valuable collections of modern and contemporary art in Asia and the Middle East — on a level that rivals top institutions in Russia and Japan.
Surprisingly, many people outside the region have no idea that such a collection exists beyond Europe and North America. But it does — and it’s magnificent.
The museum owns original masterpieces by some of the most iconic names in art history, including:
Vincent van Gogh
Salvador Dalí
Pablo Picasso
Jackson Pollock
Andy Warhol
Francis Bacon
Mark Rothko
Marcel Duchamp
Alberto Giacometti
René Magritte
Willem de Kooning
Roy Lichtenstein
Max Ernst
Paul Gauguin
Edvard Munch
As well as Iranians like Mohammad Ghaffari, Parviz Tanavoli, Gregorian and more.
The museum itself — designed by Kamran Diba — is an architectural gem, blending modernist elements with Persian aesthetics.
It’s not just a museum, it’s a cultural revelation, and an absolute must-visit when the permanent collection is on display. This is truly one of Iran’s greatest artistic assets, and a point of pride for the entire region."
