The drive to the site was scenic, with the majestic Bradost Mountains slowly rising in the distance. When we arrived, the first thing that struck me was the scale of the cave. The entrance is wide and triangular, perched high above the valley, and the climb up (while a little steep) was absolutely worth it for the views alone.
But it’s not just the natural beauty that makes this place so powerful—it’s the history beneath your feet. This is where archaeologists discovered Neanderthal remains going back over 60,000 years, including a skeleton known as “Shanidar 1,” who lived despite major injuries—proof that even Neanderthals cared for each other. Just standing in that space, knowing how ancient it is and imagining early humans living, surviving, even burying their dead here... it gave me goosebumps.
Inside the cave, it’s cool and quiet, and although parts are blocked for preservation, you can still see the depth of the excavation and some of the original dig sites. It felt surreal—like being in a live documentary about human history.
There were a few local families and visitors there when I went, especially because it was a Friday, but it never felt crowded. I’d definitely recommend going earlier in the day when the light is softer and the climb isn’t too hot.

"It was a 3 hours driving from Erbil to this place..
There's parking spot, but i didn't see a cafeteria there, so I advice you to take some cold liquids..
For going up to the cave, there's maybe about 700 steps easy steps but there's no fence I felt worried all the way up for my kids.
There's resting place for every end of the steps, the rest place has chairs and shadow but also no fence!!
Once we arrived to the cave, the view was wonderful, like you reach the moon..
The entrance is for free."
