TIL about the first people to make a non-stop transatlantic flight, John Alcock and Arthur Brown. They crossed in 1919, eight years before Lindbergh made his famous solo flight. Both men were knighted. Celebrities in their time, they are almost forgotten now.
They're well remembered in Ireland. I've been to the memorial at the big where they landed, and everyone in the local town, Clifden, knows the history of it.

"Memorial plaque to commemorate the landing area of the first trans atlantic ocean flight completed in 1919. Very impressive acknowledgement!"

"Excellent view in all directions, nice fairly level gravel parking lot. Single track road but not an issue for me. We spent the night in the motorhome and it was peaceful and quiet. Some local traffic but nothing excessive. Late September so windy and a bit chilly but an exceptional view with sunset on the water and sunrise over the mountains."
