I visited Ballymoon Castle this weekend, just outside Bagenalstown, Carlow. There’s no famous stories or big battles to speak of here. But like a few sites I’ve visited, there’s this strange stillness to it, a kind of calm you can’t really explain. It’s as if you can feel that a lot happened there but it was all a long time ago. I definitely felt it here. Built in the 1300s, most likely by the Ca...

Reviews Summary

Ballymoon Castle is praised for its impressive, unique architecture and peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere, making it a serene spot for exploration and picnics. While parking can be challenging, visitors find the effort worthwhile for the chance to discover this historical gem. Reddit+2

"A lovely castle with large grounds. The castle is nestled in a big field with a large surrounding stone wall. Once inside you can see the structures as they once were, it has many openings in its walls and the fact you can walk around the whole area is a bonus. Parking is on a busy main road and will take time to find a safe parking spot. Its well worth a visit but parking is tricky, cheers"

Michael Raj Groves

"Beautiful place to visit and let the kids roam around and explore. No one else around so we spent ages there. Some rooms and nooks to explore. Then had a walk around the outside of it. Very impressive structure in a stunning countryside location. Parking for 1 car directly across from entrance to field in disused gateway. Will go back again."

Van Man

"Dicey parking, you fly past it the first time turn around through a gate, a bridge, a field to a forgotten gem of a castle. Health and safety be damned, go explore, climb, listen as the wind whispers dreams unspoken for hundreds of years."
