While the Bray Head Cross hike is rewarding, paths vary in steepness. Consider your fitness level and wear sturdy shoes, especially after rain, as some routes can get slippery. The route from the promenade is more direct but steeper than the woodland path from the bus station.

Day trip from Dublin, wife uses a walker, Bray or Howth

Hello. We're from the U.S., and plan to go to Dublin for six days. One day, I'd like to go outside the city, probably to Howth or Bray (we'd go there by train) to be near the seashore. My wife uses a walker, so we can't go to anyplace that's too hilly. Which of these places…

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Bray Heritage Trail for its breathtaking panoramic views and the iconic Bray Head Cross. The hike is generally considered moderately challenging and rewarding, with options for different routes. While the summit offers spectacular scenery, some find the steeper sections challenging, and advise good footwear. The accessibility from Dublin via train is a major plus.

"Great hike up on a fabulous day. Didn’t take too long with 3 kids. Up and down in about 1.5 hour. We did spend about 30 minutes relaxing and flying drone. Great view form above."

"Bray Head Cross is one of the most iconic landmarks along Ireland’s east coast, offering breathtaking views, peaceful trails, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment for those who make the climb. Situated at the southern end of Bray’s famous promenade, this hike is a perfect blend of nature, history, and scenery.

The trail to the cross atop Bray Head is a moderately challenging walk that takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace and the route you take. There are a couple of different paths leading up—some steeper and rockier, others more gradual through woodland. While it’s not an extremely difficult hike, good footwear is recommended, especially after rain, as the rocks can get quite slippery. It’s manageable for most people with a basic level of fitness, and it’s popular among both locals and tourists.

Once at the top, the views are absolutely spectacular. On a clear day, you can see across Dublin Bay to Howth, and even as far south as the Wicklow Mountains. The cross itself, standing tall and firm against the wind, has been a fixture since 1950 and serves as both a spiritual symbol and a popular photo spot. The combination of sea cliffs, greenery, and open skies gives this place a serene and almost cinematic quality.

The ambience at the summit is peaceful, especially in the early morning or just before sunset. You’ll often find people sitting quietly, taking in the view, meditating, or enjoying a packed lunch. It’s a great place for reflection and disconnecting from busy life. Birds soar overhead, and the only sounds are the wind and distant waves below.

As for accessibility, it starts right off the Bray promenade, so it’s easy to get to by foot or public transport. There are cafes and shops nearby, so you can reward yourself with a coffee or ice cream after the descent.

Overall, Bray Head Cross is a must-visit spot in Co. Wicklow. Whether you’re a hiker, a photographer, or just someone who wants a stunning view without an extreme climb, this location delivers. It’s a small adventure with a big payoff, and one of the best short hikes you’ll find near Dublin."

"Beautiful viewpoint. We came up here from the other side, bus station briar wood, line L2 from bray city centre and can highly recommend taking this route. It’s a 40min walk through fields and forests until you reach the top and you have amazing views already along the way. Also, it’s not as steep as the route from the coastline (we thought), which we took on our way back down. We did the walk in the evening and spent 2h just before the sunset!"
