🇮🇪 Nestled in the wild beauty of County Donegal, Ireland, Glenveagh Castle was built between 1867 and 1873 by Captain John George Adair. Inspired by Scottish baronial architecture, the castle was designed to rival Queen Victoria’s Balmoral. But its history is as dramatic as its setting: Adair infamously evicted 244 tenants in the notorious Derryveagh Evictions, casting a shadow over the estate. A...

Reviews Summary

Glenveagh Castle is widely praised for its stunning gardens and the breathtaking natural beauty of its surrounding national park. Visitors appreciate the historical insights offered by the castle tours and the friendly, helpful staff. While the castle itself is considered pleasant, the gardens and park are often cited as the main draw. Some visitors note the significant walk or shuttle bus requirement to reach the castle.

"Glenveagh Castle is steepedd in history, the views are stunning even on a cold October day. The staff are friendly and helpful. We got the bus up to the castle. I had done the tour many years ago. This time it was self guided. I fell you get a better idea of the history with a tour guide. But it is well worth the visit, the views, the garden are just amazing. There is a coffe shop at the castle and a restaurant at the visitor centre. Would highly recommend Glenveagh Castle. N"

"Worth the trip for the gardens alone. They’re so well put together. Beginning to plant our own vegetable garden and have taken some inspiration for their methods.
The castle inside is fine, without being too spectacular. The staff were all very helpful and friendly; and the cafe was delicious and very fairly priced."

"Nice walk but it's 4km each way so be ready to walk or take the bus to and from the visitor centre to the castle. Castle is nice but small area to view, won't take more than able 30 minutes. The gardens are nice and can add another 45 minutes. There is ice cream and a cafe at the castle and at the visitor center near the parking lot."

The History of Glenveagh Castle

Glenveagh Castle, a striking castellated mansion, was constructed between 1867 and 1873 by Captain John George Adair. Inspired by Scottish baronial architecture, Adair envisioned a castle that would rival Queen Victoria's Balmoral. The castle's construction was ambitious, set amidst the rugged beauty of County Donegal. TikTok

However, Adair's legacy is also marked by controversy. He was responsible for the infamous Derryveagh Evictions in 1861, where 244 tenants were forcibly removed from their homes to make way for his estate expansion. This dark chapter in the castle's history adds a complex layer to its story. TikTok

Today, Glenveagh Castle stands as a testament to Victorian ambition and the dramatic history of the region. Visitors can explore the opulent interiors and learn about the lives of those who lived and worked here, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Reddit

Visitors can enjoy a variety of walking trails, ranging from gentle strolls around the castle to more challenging hikes into the mountains. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including a significant red deer population. Keep an eye out for golden eagles, which have been reintroduced to the area. Instagram

The park provides a stunning backdrop for the castle, with its dramatic mountains, serene lakes, and open moorland. It's an ideal destination for those seeking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way. Instagram

The Gardens of Glenveagh Castle

The gardens at Glenveagh Castle are a significant attraction, renowned for their meticulous design and variety. They were developed over many years, with significant input from Adair's wife, Cornelia, and later by the Hon. Mrs. Ernest Guinness. Reddit

Highlights include the Italian Garden, the Walled Garden, and the Pleasure Ground, each offering a unique aesthetic. The gardens are a testament to horticultural skill and provide a beautiful contrast to the wilder landscape of the park. Reddit
