Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Guinness Tower a charming, hidden gem within the beautiful Cong Woods. The adventure of finding it and the unique climb up the tower are highlights, offering a peaceful escape from crowds. While the views from the top are now obscured by trees, the historical significance and the magical woodland setting make it a worthwhile visit.

"Definitive How To Get There Guide:
Very important, you cannot access by walking past Ashford Castle Hotel, private grounds.
Starting at Cong Abbey, walk alongside the river to the back of the Abbey, towards Monk's Fishing House. There is a helpful map here. Cross the footbridge at What3Words championship.undertakes.spoiled and walk past the Stone Grotto. Follow the blue trail clockwise, untill you reach W3W toothpick.flags.enzyme, where the trail turns right up some steps. Continue forward instead, then keep left at the fork in the path, at W3W casseroles.chivalry.sped. The tower then appears on your right.
It is well worth a visit, set in a beautiful and peaceful woodland. The view of the tree canopies from the top makes you feel like a little bird amongst the branches, be aware of 100+ stone and potentially slippy steps. A highlight of our time in Cong."

"The trail is well marked however, the tower doesn't jump out as it is surround by tree that is the same height as it, one there, the stone tower is quite impressive, the tight stairs are worth the effort, a lovely outlook looking over the tress, this is one of the many things to see during forest trail."

"Worth the visit. Tower built, which is now in the middle of the beautiful forest. Bit of an effort to find it, but that was part of the fun. To get there, enter at the Abbey and cross the bridge behind the Abbey over the bridge. Find the blue route, and follow it clockwise, you need to leave the blue route half way or so (on a trail thats not part of any of the routes) for a few 100 meters. You can climb the tower. You may need to give the gate a bit of a tug to open it, but access is permitted"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Purpose of the Guinness Tower

The Guinness Tower, also known locally as Leonard's Tower, was constructed in 1864 by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. It was built as a picturesque folly on the expansive grounds of Ashford Castle, intended to enhance the estate's aesthetic appeal and provide a unique architectural feature. Standing over 20 meters high, it was designed to be a prominent landmark within the landscape. Instagram+1

Originally, the tower would have offered commanding views of the surrounding countryside, including the castle and Lough Corrib. However, over the decades, the trees within Cong Woods have grown significantly, reaching heights comparable to the tower itself. This natural growth has transformed the tower's outlook, creating a more intimate experience within the forest canopy rather than expansive vistas. TikTokReddit

Despite the change in its view, the Guinness Tower remains a beloved and somewhat secret gem. Its historical significance as part of the Guinness legacy and its enchanting location in the heart of Cong Woods continue to draw visitors seeking a touch of history and a unique woodland adventure. Reddit

Navigating Cong Woods to Find the Tower

Finding the Guinness Tower is an adventure in itself, as it's not directly signposted from the main paths and is intentionally somewhat hidden. The most common starting point is Cong Abbey, where you can find maps and begin your exploration of the woods. Reddit

From the Abbey, you'll typically follow the river towards the Monk's Fishing House and then pick up the marked blue trail. However, the key to reaching the tower is knowing when to deviate from this marked route. Travelers often mention specific What3Words locations or advise continuing forward at forks in the path when the blue trail turns. Reddit

Be prepared for a walk that involves crossing footbridges and navigating woodland paths. The effort to find it is often described as part of the fun, and the reward is discovering this secluded historical structure. The journey through the ancient trees adds to the magical, almost secret, atmosphere of the place. InstagramReddit

The Climb and the Experience

The ascent up the Guinness Tower involves climbing over 100 stone steps. These steps are described as narrow and can be potentially slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The climb is a physical experience that adds to the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top. Reddit

Once at the summit, the view is unique. Instead of sweeping panoramas, visitors are treated to an immersive perspective looking out over the dense canopy of Cong Woods. This creates a feeling of being nestled amongst the trees, a 'little bird amongst the branches,' as one reviewer put it. Reddit

While the original expansive views are no longer present, the climb and the unique treetop vantage point are considered well worth the effort. It's an experience that offers a different kind of beauty, one that emphasizes the natural surroundings and the historical presence of the tower within them. TikTokReddit
