Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking views from the summit, describing the experience as incredible and rewarding, even on less clear days. The challenging but manageable climb is a highlight for many, though the descent can be tough on the joints. While the unpredictable weather is a common factor, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many eager to return.

"Incredible experience! We were blessed with a beautiful day and were rewarded with stunning views and a rainbow. The climb was manageable with poles and took us 2 hours going up and just over an hour going down, but in good conditions."

Fiona Vernon

"Croagh Patrick, the beauty of Ireland. The views from the top are absolutely stunning. The hike took me about 3 hours with plenty of breaks. The trail is clear and straightforward, though it does get quite rocky as you approach the summit."

Noble Paul

"A really amazing climb and manageable for most fit and able people.

The climb itself is not too difficult (I would say I’m an averagely fit person) - can be a little tough on joints when climbing down. A few in my group are not the most active people (and they do regularly vape) - they definitely found it quite challenging but after said they would be happy to do it again.

If you are planning a trip to visit/hike I would recommend 2/3 open days when booking in advance, so you have a higher chance of having a selection of days with possible different weather forecasts. As you can see from my photos it wasn’t a very clear day for us and at the top we couldn’t see anything below - still 110% worth it - but if you want to have higher chances of good weather book a 3-4 nights locally - plenty of beautiful places to stay.

If it is raining the rocks would be quite slippery going down.

Would recommend walking sticks if you’re a little shakey/ your balance isn’t the best or if you feel you may need a little assistance.

We found windbreakers, layers and light rain jackets to be favourable and sensible footwear - although some do this hike barefoot!!

We started around 7 AM on a Saturday and so there weren’t too many people - from 10am onwards the trails get rather busy - so something to keep in mind!!

We loved our hike and look forward to returning in future to do it again!

Dogs are not allowed!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Pilgrimage of Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick, often called 'The Reek,' is Ireland's holiest mountain and a significant site of pilgrimage. For over 1,500 years, people have climbed its slopes, with the tradition dating back to St. Patrick himself, who is said to have fasted on the summit in 441 AD. Instagram The climb is undertaken by tens of thousands of people annually, particularly on 'Reek Sunday,' the last Sunday in July. TikTok Many climb barefoot as a form of penance or devotion. TikTok

This spiritual journey is deeply ingrained in Irish culture. The chapel at the summit, dedicated to St. Patrick, serves as a focal point for pilgrims. The act of climbing is often seen as a test of faith and endurance, with many offering prayers and reflections along the way. TikTok The experience is not just physical but also deeply spiritual for many who undertake the ascent. TikTok

While the pilgrimage is a primary draw, the mountain also attracts hikers and tourists who come to experience its natural beauty and challenging terrain. The blend of spiritual significance and physical challenge makes Croagh Patrick a unique destination. TikTok

Navigating the Croagh Patrick Trail

The Croagh Patrick trail is a 7km (4.3 mile) linear route to the summit, with an elevation gain of 764 meters (2,507 feet). Instagram The climb is steep from the outset, with the initial section featuring a well-maintained path. However, as you ascend, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and uneven, requiring careful footing. Reddit The final section, known as the 'cone,' is particularly challenging, with loose scree and steep gradients. TikTok

Recent improvements have been made to the path on the cone section, including the addition of steps, which aim to make the ascent and descent safer and more manageable. TikTokInstagram Despite these improvements, the trail remains demanding. It's crucial to wear appropriate footwear, such as sturdy hiking boots, as the rocks can be slippery, especially when wet. Reddit Many hikers also find walking sticks invaluable for balance and support, particularly on the descent. Reddit

The entire round trip typically takes between 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make for rest and to admire the views. Instagram While some very fit individuals can complete the hike in under 3 hours, it's wise to allocate ample time, especially if you're not an experienced hiker. Reddit

Capturing the Majesty of Croagh Patrick

Croagh Patrick offers photographers a dramatic and rewarding landscape. The panoramic views from the summit are arguably the main attraction, providing breathtaking vistas over Clew Bay, its numerous islands, and the surrounding mountains. TikTokInstagram These views are particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a magical glow over the scenery. TikTok+1 The winding trail itself, with its rugged terrain and the iconic chapel at the peak, also presents excellent photographic opportunities. Instagram

However, the weather in this part of Ireland is famously unpredictable. Reddit While clear days offer spectacular visibility, cloudy or misty conditions can create a moody and atmospheric scene, adding a unique character to your photographs. TikTokInstagram Drone footage can capture the immense scale of the mountain and its dramatic coastal setting, offering a unique perspective. TikTokInstagram

When planning your photography expedition, consider bringing a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive landscapes. A sturdy tripod can be beneficial for low-light conditions, especially during dawn or dusk. Given the potential for rain and wind, weather-sealed camera gear is highly recommended. Instagram
