Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Drimnagh Castle for its authentic medieval feel, unique flooded moat, and beautiful gardens, often calling it a 'hidden treasure.' The friendly staff and affordable entry are frequently highlighted positives. Some note the lack of modern amenities like card payments or a gift shop, and its slightly off-the-beaten-path location.

"Great experience. This is not a big flashy castle. It is an excellent example of where a late comer built a castle for the Pale when all the “good” places had been built on already. Here you’ll see a modest structure with evidence of many succeeding inhabitants influencing reconstruction and expansion of the buildings and grounds. The caretakers are quick to offer information but guided tours are not explicitly available. A $20 donation above entrance fee goes a long way to getting personal information when there are few other people around. One drawback is that you can’t pre purchase your tickets. Cash only. No gift shop. Overall 5 stars; an intimate peek into medieval castle life."

"I recently visited Drimnagh Castle and thoroughly enjoyed a guided tour. The castle is off the beaten track and is a gem. Once you step through the gates you are transported back in time. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Excellent value for money, tickets are very reasonable. The gardens are absolutely stunning. I would recommend visiting the castle to my friends and family."

"We took a ride out to Drimnagh Castle: a medieval castle that has been well restored and has the only flooded moat in Ireland that remains. This was a gem of a find.

It was a €22 taxi ride out and a €2/person bus ride back to Temple Bar. The bus was better.

Every castle has some interesting aspect of it and parts here were the rebuild and the gardens. I especially loved the wood carvings at the base of the new support beams for the roof. Each beam had its own character representing people who helped with the rebuild. It was well worth the €7/person entry. We would have paid the €9/person for the guided tour, but they were busy already."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Drimnagh Castle

Drimnagh Castle stands as a testament to the Norman presence in Ireland, specifically within the historic Pale. Unlike many grander castles that were heavily rebuilt in later centuries, Drimnagh offers a more authentic glimpse into a feudal fortress. It was constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century by the de Bermingham family, a prominent Norman family in the region. The castle's strategic location and its moat, which is the only one of its kind still flooded in Ireland, highlight its defensive purpose. TikTok

Over the centuries, the castle saw various inhabitants and underwent modifications, reflecting the changing times and architectural styles. The restoration efforts have been crucial in preserving its medieval character. These efforts, often undertaken by dedicated individuals and community groups, have brought the castle back to a state where visitors can appreciate its original form and understand the lives of those who lived within its walls. The wood carvings on the new roof supports, each depicting a unique character, are a modern touch that honors the spirit of community involvement in its preservation. Reddit

The castle's history is intertwined with the broader narrative of Anglo-Norman settlement in Ireland. It represents a more modest, yet significant, example of castle construction compared to the more palatial structures that emerged later. Visiting Drimnagh Castle provides an intimate peek into medieval castle life, offering a different perspective than the more famous, heavily restored castles. Reddit

Exploring the Gardens and Their Secrets

The gardens at Drimnagh Castle are more than just aesthetically pleasing; they are a living repository of historical knowledge, particularly concerning medicinal plants. Anne, one of the gardeners, has been praised for her willingness to share her expertise, explaining the therapeutic properties of various herbs and plants grown on the grounds. This adds a unique educational layer to the visit, connecting visitors to ancient practices of healing and well-being. TikTokReddit

These gardens offer a tranquil escape and a chance to appreciate the horticultural heritage associated with medieval estates. While not vast, they are meticulously maintained and provide a beautiful contrast to the stone architecture of the castle. The careful selection and cultivation of plants reflect historical uses, from culinary herbs to remedies for common ailments. It’s a space where history and nature converge, offering a sensory experience that complements the castle's historical narrative. Reddit

Visitors looking for a deeper connection to the past will find the garden tours particularly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to learn about the practical aspects of medieval life, where the surrounding flora played a vital role in daily sustenance and health. The passion of the gardeners in sharing this knowledge makes the experience both informative and memorable. Reddit
