What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Generator Dublin offers an affordable and social stay in a prime Smithfield location, praised for its vibrant atmosphere and helpful staff. However, some guests find the extra charges for amenities and the restrictions on outside food inconvenient, and a few have noted inconsistent service quality.
"Really affordable accommodation for central Ireland! The rooms are basic / standard, but exactly as pictured and fairly clean. The staff are really nice and helpful. There’s also a really big social scene, with lots of travellers you can connect with at their daily events or on their group chats. My main qualm was not being able to bring outside food into the premises (a rule made as Generator has their own food they sell too). It just felt like a big inconvenience. The other thing is the toilets are fine but the women’s was on a separate floor to our room / they don’t have facilities on each floor which was a bit annoying. But, like I said, for the cost, the services were quite good. Definitely the best part about staying here was the location - it’s in central Dublin and pretty much every attraction is within walking distance so! If you’re looking for fairly cheap accommodation and a chance to connect with other travels, it’s definitely the right vibe for you"

"I had an amazing stay at Generator Hostel Dublin Smithfield, especially considering the booking mix-up that was entirely due to Revolut and their third-party booking partner. When we arrived, our reservation didn’t show up on the hostel’s system, but the staff went above and beyond to help us out. Arthur, Carlos, and Noelia were incredibly helpful. They worked hard to track down our payment and got everything sorted quickly so we could enjoy our stay.
The room itself was great: clean, comfortable, and well-priced for the quality and location. Smithfield is a perfect spot for exploring Dublin as its right beside the Smithfield Luas stop, and we stayed there to attend a music gig at the hostel, which was a lot of fun. Aside from the booking issue (which wasn’t the hostel’s fault), everything was excellent.
I’ll definitely be staying here again and highly recommend Generator Hostel to anyone visiting Dublin. Thanks again to Arthur, Carlos, and Noelia for making our stay so smooth and enjoyable!"

"Where do I start….
I have on several occasions in a very short space of time felt embarrassed for the business.
Service here is very similar to a Karen cafe without the fun of knowing it’s all out on.
Staff actively encouraging violence by not defusing a situation in that eventually came to blows and gardi being called (your staff need to learn to walk away from a situation rather that make it worse by stand in there and arguing with them to the point it becomes violent)
Prices for drinks have 3 different prices. The website has a different price to the menu on the walls which in turn have a different price to the digital screens then you get to the till and it’s all over the place.
The food in the evening was fine but everything about the breakfast service and food was disappointing and embarrassing.
There was only one server on which led to us waiting at the bar without acknowledgement for 10 minutes. Then after sorting our coffee out then disappeared to which 2 different people left due to the lack of server and waiting for a few minutes. There even was a member of staff on the coffee machine that proclaimed that he wasn’t working on the bar and just ignored them.
The breakfast itself was in no way even good it was all fried including the bacon could have at least grilled the bacon for gods sake and the black pudding was so overcooked it was inedible.
It’s a real shame about the service as the location was perfect for what we wanted and the rooms are just fine you get what you pay for I guess.
I have been in the past and it thought it was great, but this time I couldn’t recommend or even return here which is very sad."

The Generator Dublin Experience: More Than Just a Bed
While the social aspect is a major draw, it's important to manage expectations regarding room amenities. Reviews indicate that rooms are basic and functional, with shared dorms offering little privacy beyond a curtain. Travelers often recommend bringing essentials like towels, toiletries, and locks to avoid extra costs. Despite these points, the hostel's commitment to fostering a community feel is evident, with many guests praising the opportunities to socialize and the helpfulness of the staff in facilitating connections.
Generator Dublin's location in Smithfield is another significant advantage. It's well-connected by public transport, specifically the Luas tram, which provides easy access to all major Dublin attractions. This convenience, combined with the hostel's social programming, makes it a popular choice for those seeking an affordable and engaging stay in the city.
Navigating Generator Dublin: Practicalities and Pitfalls
Another point of contention for some guests is the policy on outside food and drinks. Generator Dublin prohibits bringing your own provisions into the hostel, directing guests to their on-site food and beverage services, which some find to be 'ridiculously expensive.' This can be a drawback for budget-conscious travelers who prefer to self-cater or explore local eateries. However, the convenience of having food and drink available on-site, especially after a long day of sightseeing, is also appreciated by some.
Customer service experiences at Generator Dublin can be mixed. While many guests commend the staff for being friendly and helpful, a few reviews highlight instances of poor service, including staff not defusing tense situations and a general lack of attentiveness during busy periods like breakfast. It's worth noting that booking mix-ups, though not always the hostel's fault, have been resolved efficiently by the staff, showcasing their commitment to guest satisfaction when issues arise.
