Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Kilmallock Dominican Priory as a 'hidden gem' and an 'atmospheric, haunting ruin.' The free admission and impressive Gothic architecture, particularly the east window, are major highlights. While it's a ruin, its well-preserved details offer a poignant glimpse into Ireland's past, making it highly recommended for a day trip.

"Easy access to this wonderful site just of the main street. As you enter Kilmallock drive by the townwall tower and turn right into the carpark. It a short walk from here . Through a private business car park with right of way footpath ."

Joseph McCooey

"This friary, dedicated to St. Saviour, was founded in 1291 by the FitzGeralds on land which the Dominicans acquired with royal consent from John Bluet, who owned property in the town. The friars were unlawfully ejected from the site by the Bishop of Limerick almost immediately, but had their rights restored following a royal inquiry. Dominican friars remained here until 1571.

The church has a nave (the main part of the church where the congregation sat) and a chancel (where the altar was sited), both original late 13th century features, while the early 14th century saw the addition of a south transept, a tall bell-tower halfway along the church's length, and an aisle on both the southside of the nave and the west side of the transept.

The quality of architectural detail is very fine, and the five-light east window of the church is one of the finest in Ireland. The cloister, where the friars worked and prayed, is to the north of the church; the domestic buildings which were ranged around it originally were much changed in the 15th century."
