Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Old Kenmare Road's breathtaking scenery, diverse landscapes, and the sense of solitude found on the trail. Many highlight the rewarding nature of the hike, despite its challenging sections. Some caution about the rough terrain on the Kenmare side and the unpredictable weather.

"I’m nowhere near fit, and this hike was a challenge. We parked near the Killarney bus station and walked all the way to Kenmare. With very few short stops, it took us almost 8 hours. 😅 We did stop at Torc Waterfall for photos and then mid-journey to have a quick bite. The views are amazing and you don’t see a soul the whole way. Recommend to have the proper gear for all types of weather and waterproof footgear is a must."

Carloselx

"Fantastic walk. We parked in Killarney train station and walked to Kenmare. 27km roughly and it took us around 7 hours which included a lot of stopping and breaks. And we had two big backpacks with us as we were staying in Kenmare for the night. The heavy bags did make it harder but it was totally worth it. A nice mix of terrain and scenery to keep it interesting. Rocks, trees, moors, woods, heather, hills, streams waterfalls. Everything that makes for a good walk. And the views... wow! Will definitely do it again. Maybe during the winter after a bit of snow."

"Old Killarney road.
Kenmare side of the road is very rough, like bottom of the river. Don't go with bicycle unless you are experienced mountain cyclists.
Don't drive up with car, there nowhere to turn around."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of the Old Kenmare Road

The Old Kenmare Road is more than just a hiking trail; it's a historical artery. Built in the 1750s, it was designed to connect Killarney with the coastal town of Kenmare. However, by the early 1820s, it had largely fallen into disuse, becoming a forgotten path through the wilderness. Instagram

The mid-19th century brought further hardship to the region. During the Great Famine, many families living along the road perished or were forced to emigrate. By the 1860s, the landlord cleared the remaining inhabitants to transform the area into a private hunting ground, further cementing the road's abandonment. Evidence of its past can still be found, such as graffiti etched into rocks by soldiers from as early as 1815. Instagram+1

Today, parts of the road have been resurfaced, making it more accessible for hikers. Yet, it retains its wild charm and offers a profound connection to the history and resilience of the people who once called this rugged landscape home. Instagram

Navigating the Terrain and Weather

The Old Kenmare Road presents a varied terrain that can challenge even experienced hikers. While sections have been improved, particularly closer to Killarney, the path can become rough, rocky, and boggy, especially as you approach Kenmare. Reddit This mix of surfaces requires good balance and sturdy footwear. The ascent, particularly up Cardiac Hill, is steep and can be demanding, but the panoramic rewards are immense. TikTok

Killarney's weather is notoriously fickle. Visitors should be prepared for sun, rain, wind, and mist, often within the same day. Waterproof and windproof outer layers are essential, as are waterproof hiking boots to navigate potentially waterlogged paths. Reddit Dressing in layers is highly recommended, allowing you to adjust to changing temperatures and exertion levels. Checking the local weather forecast before setting out is crucial, but always be ready for unexpected shifts. Instagram

Wildlife Encounters on the Trail

Killarney National Park is a haven for wildlife, and the Old Kenmare Road offers opportunities to observe some of its inhabitants in their natural habitat. Red deer, Ireland's largest native land mammal, are often spotted in the park, particularly during dawn and dusk. Instagram Keep an eye out for herds grazing in the valleys or on the hillsides. Instagram

Beyond the deer, you might encounter other fascinating creatures. Wild goats are known to roam the area, adding a touch of rugged charm to the landscape. Instagram Birdsong fills the air, and if you're lucky, you might spot various bird species native to the region. Remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing their environment. Instagram+1
