What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Photo Museum Ireland for its free, impactful contemporary photography exhibitions and its role as a vibrant community hub. The shop's curated selection and the quality of workshops are frequently highlighted. However, some find the exhibition spaces minimal and lacking the traditional museum atmosphere, suggesting it might appeal more to photography aficionados than the general public.
"I popped in here unexpectedly, and I was so impressed with the collection and community space the Photo Museum seems to provide and cultivate! From the beginning, there were lots of flyers for community events. The shop has lots of film and interesting books on photography. The two floors of free exhibits were really beautiful, and I deeply appreciated the intention in curation and storytelling. Seems they support new and diverse voices in photography, which is great. Also saw ads for workshops and the like of which I’m sure would be lots of fun to try out. Cool place. Free and accessible!"

"I was really looking forward to visiting the Photo Museum Ireland. I had read about it in advance and expected an engaging, well-curated experience that reflected its title as the national centre for contemporary photography.
Unfortunately, I left feeling quite disappointed.
The space is very minimal — a few photos on the wall, and that’s about it. There were no clear explanations, no interactive elements, no atmosphere that would make this feel like a museum. We even wandered around hoping to find other exhibition rooms or hidden galleries… but this was it.
Honestly, it felt more like a quiet corridor in a gallery building than a proper museum. If I hadn’t known where I was, I wouldn’t have guessed it was a cultural institution at all.
This place might work for people deeply into contemporary minimalist photography, but for the average visitor expecting a museum experience, it’s extremely underwhelming.
In my opinion, calling it a museum is misleading."

"From the moment I first walked into the Photo Museum Ireland I felt welcome. Doing the Introduction to 35mm Film Photography & Darkroom workshop sparked a fire within that hasn't dampened since. I've now done multiple courses and have consistently found the staff, tutors and other students to be friendly, patient and passionate people. I have also that the staff have been generous at providing support and guidance whenever I have reached out. The exhibitions are always worth a visit and the workshops offered are delivered to the highest standard. The equipment, facilities and location are top notch and in particular I have found the darkroom to be a wonderful place. It has everything I need and I always find it to be great working order and notice that it is respected by all that use it before and after. The one-to-ones have been particularly helpful to me as well as the introductory sessions to the facilities. I wholeheartedly recommend Photo Museum Ireland and am truly delighted that Dublin has a facility like this."
