What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Lachish River Park is widely praised as a beautiful, free public space perfect for families and nature lovers, offering a pleasant walk and an engaging animal corner. While many appreciate the accessibility and natural setting, some concerns have been raised regarding animal welfare due to visitor feeding habits and the intensity of summer heat in less shaded areas.
"Great walk towards the namal. There is a kind of zoo with Ibex, antelope and deer, including a sad, single zebra. It was a bit sad to see especially as many parents and children easily were feeding the animals bread and things not suited to their diet, this was extremely harmful and concerning. There was at least adequate shade for the animals and food and water. Apart from that, lovely walk shaded parts to sit along the canal, there are toilets at the entry (not a lot of parking), and a food cart. Also exploitative people offering a pony or horse ride for children in this horrid summer heat. The pony appears to be blind in one eye. There is a small playground (up a little hill) away from the nasal between the zoo and Edgar (name?) Park. Nice for kids to take their bicycles or scooters."

Exploring the Animal Corner
Despite this concern, the animal corner remains a highlight, offering a free and accessible way for children and adults alike to connect with nature. The presence of these animals adds a unique dimension to the park, making it more than just a green space. It's a place where the community can observe and appreciate wildlife, provided responsible behavior is maintained by all visitors.
Navigating the Park: Paths and Amenities
While the park offers a food cart and restrooms near the entrance, visitors are strongly advised to bring their own food and water for picnics. This is particularly important as shade can be limited in some areas, and the food cart may not cater to all needs. The park's proximity to the harbor also means that more extensive dining options are a short walk away, offering a convenient alternative for those seeking a wider variety of choices.
The Importance of Responsible Tourism
Furthermore, the presence of exploitative practices, such as offering rides on potentially unwell animals (like a pony described as blind in one eye) during extreme heat, is also noted. Responsible tourism at Lachish River Park involves not only respecting the natural environment but also ensuring the well-being of its inhabitants. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of their actions, adhere to park guidelines, and report any concerning behavior to park authorities. By doing so, everyone can contribute to preserving this beautiful space for future enjoyment.
