Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Teatro Luigi Pirandello as a beautiful, historic building with a rich past, particularly its opera traditions. The 'Il Risveglio degli Dei' show in the Valley of the Temples is consistently described as a magical and unforgettable sunrise experience. Some note that things can close early in Agrigento.
"Luigi Pirandello Theatre in Agrigento, built in 1870 by the architect Giovan Battista and the engineer Dionisio Sciascia. In 1881, a grand inauguration took place, on the occasion of the visit of His Majesty Umberto I, King of Italy, and Queen Margherita. Mayor Girgenti presented Her Majesty the Queen with a parchment case regarding the baptism of the theatre, which was named "Queen Margherita". Since then, many theatre seasons have taken place and in particular there has been a great commitment to opera. There were many companies that performed on the stages of the Agrigento theatre.
On 10 January 1938, the theatre was sold by the Municipality to a private company that used it as a cinema. In 1946 the theatre was named after Luigi Pirandello, but it operated for a few more years. In fact, it was closed to the public again in 1956 for renovation work and in the meantime it was returned to the municipal administration.
Since then, the curtain of the "Pirandello" was reopened for the first time only in 1986, on the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the playwright from Agrigento, and then, finally, on April 29, 1995. On that historic day, Agrigento was able to welcome the President of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. The "Luigi Pirandello" theatre returned to its city with the performance of Pirandello's opera "The Rattle Cap" and since then the artistic performances and theatrical seasons have succeeded each other with great audience participation."
