Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Altopiano delle Pale for its breathtaking, majestic mountain scenery and the magical pink glow of the peaks at sunset. The well-marked trails and accessibility via lifts make it enjoyable for various fitness levels, though some find the plateau's vastness overwhelming. The area is highly recommended for its natural beauty and unique geological formations.

"Coral in origin, Pale di San Martino is one of the most stunning mountain ranges of the Dolomites. It is dotted with spires, peaks and corners, which turn pinkish at sunset. The geological history of Pale can be traced back to approximately 300 million years ago, when massive colonies of corals began multiplying in a shallow, peaceful sea, building reefs of over one thousand meters in height. After they had surfaced, the coral reefs have been moulded by atmospheric agents into the sharp complex shapes which can be admired today. The word dolomia (in fact, Pale is the "Dolomia dello Scilar") pays homage to the Marquis Déodat de Dolomieu, who discovered their double calcium carbonate and magnesium composition during a trip in 1788. Its austere beauty has fascinated travellers and foreign mountaineers alike since the end of the last century. However, its most striking feature - which mesmerized 19th century travellers, just like writer Dino Buzzati and present day's tourists - is its plateau. This rocky tableland raises over 2,000 m a.s.l. and features 50 km² of bare rock dotted with deep, bottomless crevices. For those that love nature and the outdoors the many paths and tracks around Passo Rolle are the perfect way to explore the stunning mountain scenery. From day excursions to the top of nearby peaks such as Castellazzo, Mulaz, Cavalazza or Colbricon, to shorter woodland paths all can be found immediately on our doorstep. The peaks, mountain refuges and breathtaking views that can be enjoyed only at certain altitudes are not worlds only accessed by those who tackle tough climbs, equipped with hiking boots and water bottles, but they can be easily accessed via lift facilitie or taxi bus. There is an impressive circular walking tours at the feet of the Pale di San Martino including climbing the small rock of Castellaz above the Passo Rolle (the path “Itinerario del Cristo pensante” ) or round trip Passo Rolle – Cavalazza- to the Laghi di Colbricon and back to the Passo Rolle."

"A breathtaking view, the stream that flows down the valley has crystalline and icy waters, as often happens in streams that form from glaciers... beautiful!"

"An absolute marvel. This trek was recommended to me by a hotel guide, and I must say it was truly worth it. The tour we took started from Pian dei Casoni and then headed towards Malga Juribello. Once we reached the mountain hut, we headed towards Passo Rolle and then continued on to Baita Segantini. The Pale di San Martino accompanied us the entire way, but once we reached the hut, they appeared before us in all their beauty and majesty. Fantastic. A spectacle of nature not to be missed. From the hut, there is a long descent that takes us back to the starting point. The entire tour is 15 km long with an elevation gain of 512 meters, but it follows a well-marked and not very challenging trail. Suitable for everyone. I always recommend wearing hiking shoes."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geological Marvel of the Dolomites

The Altopiano delle Pale, part of the larger Pale di San Martino group, is a testament to millions of years of geological evolution. Originally formed from massive coral reefs in a shallow sea around 300 million years ago, these ancient structures have been sculpted by time and elements into the dramatic spires and rugged plateau we see today. The rock itself, known as 'Dolomia,' is named after Marquis Déodat de Dolomieu, who identified its unique composition of calcium carbonate and magnesium. This geological history gives the mountains their distinctive austere beauty and the characteristic pinkish hue, especially at sunset. Reddit

This unique composition and formation create a landscape unlike any other. The plateau, rising over 2,000 meters, is a vast expanse of bare rock, marked by deep crevices and sharp peaks. It's a living museum of Earth's history, fascinating for both geologists and casual visitors alike. The sheer scale and ancient origins of the Pale di San Martino are awe-inspiring, offering a profound connection to the natural world. Reddit

Understanding this geological background enhances the appreciation of the Altopiano delle Pale. It's not just a beautiful mountain range; it's a story written in stone, a remnant of ancient seas and powerful natural forces. This makes every hike and every view a journey through deep time. Reddit

Hiking and Trekking Routes

The Altopiano delle Pale is a hiker's paradise, offering a variety of trails for all levels. For a moderate and rewarding experience, the circular tour from Passo Rolle to Cavalazza and the Laghi di Colbricon is highly recommended. This route takes you through stunning alpine scenery, culminating in the serene beauty of the Colbricon lakes, which often mirror the surrounding peaks. Reddit

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, routes leading to peaks like Castellazzo, Mulaz, or Cavalazza offer breathtaking panoramic views. The 'Itinerario del Cristo pensante' near Castellaz is another popular option, combining scenic beauty with a touch of contemplation. Many trails are well-marked, but it's always wise to carry a map or use a reliable navigation app. Reddit

Remember that even 'easy' treks at this altitude require proper preparation. Always wear sturdy hiking boots, carry sufficient water and snacks, and check the weather forecast before setting out. The accessibility via lifts and taxi buses means you can tailor your hiking experience, opting for shorter walks or more extensive multi-day treks. Reddit

Perched with a commanding view of the Pale di San Martino, this spot becomes a photographer's dream as the sun dips below the horizon.
