What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for San Francesco Church highlight its immense historical significance, particularly its potential status as the oldest Franciscan convent in Northern Italy and its past as a Napoleonic warehouse. However, many visitors note its current state of decay and frequent closure due to ongoing restoration, leading to disappointment for those hoping to visit.
"Built in 1230, tradition holds that it was erected on land donated to Saint Francis by the monks of San Colombano in exchange for his peacemaking intervention in a dispute between the monks and the bishop.
Unfortunately, in 1802, Napoleon severely damaged it and turned it into a warehouse.
A major restoration project is currently underway."

"It's a beautiful, thousand-year-old church, you can see, but it's a shame that even from a distance, you can see it needs renovation. I imagine that's why it's closed."
