What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Archiginnasio's historical significance, particularly the stunning Anatomical Theatre and the vast, atmospheric library. The walls adorned with thousands of student crests are a unique highlight. While the building itself is highly praised, some reviewers mention less-than-welcoming staff at the ticket counter.
"We visited the anatomical theatre and the library. We had booked and paid for tickets to the theatre but never received the tickets online. We explained this to the receptionist who initially just wanted to shoosh us away.
She was not a great representative of the museum I then asked her if i could show her the email confirming our booking she just tore off two tickets and handed them to us as if we were a massive inconvenience. I had to stifle a laugh when we walked away.
We were stubborn in wanting to get in because once you do it is a fascinating building and the library is fantastic and goes on forever.
The extra star taken off was for the grumpy lady on reception but the building itself is fantastic."

"The Biblioteca Comunale dell’Archiginnasio feels like a hidden sanctuary for lovers of history, books, and silence. Tucked within the grand halls of the former university, it’s easy to miss unless you’re looking for it, but it’s absolutely worth finding. The atmosphere inside is hushed and reverent, with vaulted ceilings, long wooden tables, and the weight of centuries pressing softly around you.
Though access is limited to preserve the space, just stepping into the entrance area and seeing the historic reading rooms beyond is enough to appreciate its significance. Housing over 850,000 volumes, the library continues Bologna’s centuries-old tradition of scholarship. It’s not a tourist stop in the usual sense, but if you love old books, scholarly quiet, and timeless architecture, this place will feel like a secret well kept."

"The Archiginnasio in Bologna is absolutely worth visiting. It was once the main building of the University of Bologna, the oldest university in Europe, and you can really feel the history inside. The walls are covered with thousands of coats of arms from students and professors, which makes the place feel alive with the memory of centuries of study.
The highlight is the Anatomical Theatre, where medical students once learned about the human body. The wooden carvings and statues are incredible and give you a real sense of how advanced the university was for its time.
You don’t need much time to visit, but it leaves a lasting impression. If you’re in Bologna, I highly recommend it."
