Reviews Summary

Visitors find Porta Galliera to be a charming and ornate historical gateway, particularly appreciated for its Baroque facade and its connection to Bologna's medieval past. Its convenient location near the central station is a plus, though some wish for more detailed historical information in English.

"One of the best ornamented old city gates that it was part of the medieval walls in the 17th century. I had a chance to walk around it a few times and it was nice to see that under the gate you can see the old drainage system. Also there were two fountains at the front of it which were out of action. There's also another small section of the old city wall on the opposite side of the road by the steps of Montagnola park. It would have been nice to have the history in English too on their plaques."

Angie O

"This is a charming 17th-century city gate that once fitted within the old Medieval wall that surrounded and defended the city. While the wall was brought down in the early 20th-century for urban planning and expanding the city, several of the old city gates were left standing including this attractive Baroque city gate just beside Bologna Central Station."

Brad

"When the municipality, at the beginning of the 20th century, decided to demolish the city walls to build new roads, the city gates were saved only thanks to the position taken by Giosuè Carducci.
Among the surviving gates, Porta Galliera, is located near the Central Station, and seems to resemble an "entrance gate" to the city for those travellers who come to Bologna for work or tourism."
