What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the stunning beauty of the Borromean Islands, particularly Isola Bella's palace and gardens, describing them as a must-visit Italian gem. However, some travelers found the costs for ferry tickets and separate island entry fees to be higher than expected, with a lack of clear upfront information about these additional expenses.
"The best island is Isola Bella with the palace and beautiful gardens on Lake Magiorei (sorry, I know I'm botching the spelling of that). The lake itself is nice to see and explore the many small towns around it - we walked around Stresa along the walk nearest the water and weren't disappointed. Would go back to both places again!"

"Beautiful small island town. We were there around 1400 and everything was shut down, except for a hotel coffee shop which was delightful but make sure you are there at the correct time or you will be out of luck for food. The surroundings are gorgeous though !"

"We visited two of the islands: Pescatori and Isola Bella. We thought that it was too much to do 3 islands on a day and for sure this was the best choice since traveling with a kid. The boat trip to the islands is beautiful, at Pescatori we had lunch with a great view and Isola Bella is all about the beautiful palace and its gardens. The ticket costs 20 euro per adult, we thought it was worth it cause you get to see the inside of the palace and the gardens which on top have amazing views. Also the windows from the palace have beautiful views and it is stunningly decorated. Definitely a beautiful place to visit in Italy and shouldn't be missed if you are in the area."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When planning, remember that the islands involve a lot of walking, sometimes on uneven terrain. Bring a stroller that can handle varied surfaces or opt for a carrier for very young children. Also, be mindful of the siesta hours for restaurants, as finding food for hungry kids during that time can be challenging. Packing snacks and water is always a good idea.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider packing your own lunch or snacks to enjoy by the lake, rather than dining at every restaurant. Also, compare ferry prices from different operators in Stresa; sometimes, there are slight variations. Traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring or early autumn) might also offer slightly lower prices for accommodation and potentially fewer crowds, making the experience more budget-friendly.
💖 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Consider visiting in the late afternoon to catch the magical 'golden hour' light, which enhances the beauty of the islands and creates a perfect backdrop for memorable photos. Many visitors find the islands to be a more relaxed and less crowded alternative to Lake Como, making it ideal for a romantic Italian escape.

Exploring the Borromean Islands: A Traveler's Guide
Isola Madre boasts the largest and most ancient botanical garden among the three main islands. It's a haven for nature lovers, showcasing a diverse collection of exotic plants, ancient trees, and rare flowers. The island also features a historic villa, though the gardens are the primary draw.
Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island) is the only inhabited island and retains its charming, traditional fishing village atmosphere. It's a delightful place to wander through narrow alleys, browse artisan shops, and enjoy a meal at one of its many waterfront restaurants. Travelers often find that focusing on Isola Bella and Isola Madre provides the most comprehensive experience of the islands' historical and natural beauty, while Isola dei Pescatori offers a glimpse into local life.
When planning your visit, it's crucial to be aware of the separate entrance fees for the palaces and gardens on Isola Bella and Isola Madre. While ferry tickets grant access to the islands themselves, exploring the main attractions requires additional payment. Many visitors recommend purchasing combined tickets to save money and time. The islands are easily accessible by ferry from the lakeside town of Stresa, making them a popular day trip destination from Milan and other nearby cities.
Navigating Lake Maggiore Ferries and Costs
It's important to note that ferry tickets only grant you passage to the islands. The entrance fees for the palaces and gardens on Isola Bella and Isola Madre are separate costs. These fees can add up, especially if you plan to visit multiple attractions on each island. For instance, entry to Isola Bella's palace and gardens is around €23, and Isola Madre's gardens and villa are about €20. Some travelers have expressed that this information isn't always clearly communicated upfront, leading to unexpected expenses.
To manage costs, look for combined tickets that often cover entry to both Isola Bella and Isola Madre, which can offer a discount compared to purchasing individual tickets. Researching these options before your trip or upon arrival in Stresa can help you budget effectively and make the most of your island-hopping adventure. Be aware that some ferry operators might also offer 'package deals' that include the ferry ride and island entrance fees, so it's worth inquiring about these options.
