Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Museo Archeologico Chierici to be a small but beautifully organized museum, offering valuable insights into the Roman history of the Brescello area. Its main draw is the combined ticket, which also grants access to the popular Don Camillo and Peppone Museum, making it a highly recommended and worthwhile visit for a comprehensive cultural experience.
"In 2007, the museum was renovated and is located at the San Benedetto Cultural Center. It displays the collections of the municipal antiquarium, founded in 1958, which focuses on antiquities from the Brescello area. It is believed that Brescello was founded as a Cenomane oppidum north of the Po River, but in Roman times, the town was located south of the river and was inhabited by the Arnensis tribe, unlike other Emilian towns belonging to the Pollia tribe. Brescello's location, with a convenient ford, conferred strategic importance along the river.
The museum preserves several valuable artifacts, including a series of funerary tombstones, two 1st-century AD mosaics, and marble fragments. A unique piece in northern Italy is a statue depicting a man dressed in a lacerna, the hooded cloak worn by Po River boatmen. This sculpture dates to the second half of the 1st century AD. On the ground floor, the rooms are dedicated to the Necropolis and the Domus and are filled with historical artifacts of great value, including two headless statues: one depicts a toga-clad figure from the Parma Museum, while the other may represent a river merchant, evidence of the prosperity achieved by ancient Brixellum. The section on the upper floor is dedicated to the region and works created during the Roman period, with insights into the amphorae and objects discovered during recent excavations, as well as a reconstruction of the domestic rooms."
