What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Recent visitors report that Mercato di Santa Chiara may no longer be a traditional food market, with some finding it to be primarily a souvenir shop. While there's a cafe, those seeking fresh produce might be disappointed. However, it can still offer unique gift finds.
"Very friendly staff, ordered the traditional Fregola (sort or sardinian pasta) with prawns and truffles, were delicious. Wasnt enough for me though - would have liked a bigger plate. Reasonable prices, a bit higher than average, but its worth it. Got even offered a coffee and water!! Would definitely come back!"

"Beautiful vegetables and fruits, large selection of fresh fish and seafood, kind service. Be sure to try the very delicious hams and cheeses! If you visit Cagliari, don't miss this market. 2 things are missing only: a larger variety of freshly baked goods and trash cans."

"We were there in June 2024 and can confirm at that time there was no operational market. Despite posted opening time of 7AM it was shuttered at 8AM on a Friday morning. Someone bringing trash outside told me that it might open later but that it was no longer a community market with fresh food. We went to the San Benedetto market instead and that was one of the best markets I've visited in all of Italy."

The Evolving Nature of Mercato di Santa Chiara
Recent reviews highlight that the market may no longer be the place for fresh produce, local delicacies, or a bustling atmosphere of food vendors. Instead, it seems to function primarily as a souvenir shop, offering gifts and mementos. A cafe is also present, providing a spot for visitors to relax. This change is crucial for travelers planning their itinerary, as those seeking an authentic Italian market experience might be better served elsewhere.
For those interested in the cultural significance of markets, it's worth noting the sentiment expressed in some content about such places being 'a place of the soul.' Even if its current form differs from its past, understanding this sentiment can add depth to a visit. However, for practical purposes, confirming its current operational status and offerings before visiting is highly recommended.
