The largest surviving Punic necropolis is located right in the city center of Cagliari, Sardinia. These tombs are carved in the limestone hill overlooking the city and sea. Unfortunately over the ages the tombs were ransacked and robbed. They were even used as bomb shelters during WWII. Today it is a free park you can visit. Visit in the afternoon for a beautiful sunset over Cagliari. InstagramReddit

I went to visit the Necropolis of Tuvixeddu, one of the largest historical-monumental areas in the Mediterranean that extends on the limestone rocks of one of the seven hills of Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, and if that wasn’t enough I was able to enjoy the moon and the sun at the same time and in the same sky. What a beautiful view and incredible sunset! 🇮🇹☀️🌑🤩⛰️🪦 . . . . . . . . . . #italy #ita...

"A culturally interesting place. It also has a nice view of the city being on top of a hill. It is vast and we couldn't visit a portion because the path was being repaired. Its free and only take 30mins-1 hour to walk around. We parked on the street by the entrance. There are lots of benches to sit on for a rest and there are clean toilets by the entrance."

Tre Bien

"There is so much history behind this unique place that is free of charge and worth the visit as it has a quiet state and you'll be able to learn something extra about this Italian island. The best time to visit it is in the afternoon when the sun is setting and gives a nicer hue to the rock."

"Very interesting site from the Punic age. It is quiet well preserved and the entrance is free! The parking is not easy in this area, be prepared to walk a bit if you come by car and there isn’t any shadow on site."

A Journey Through Time: The History of Tuvixeddu

The Tuvixeddu Necropolis is a vast archaeological site in Cagliari, Sardinia, renowned as one of the largest surviving Punic necropolises in the Mediterranean. Its history stretches back to the 6th century BC, with the majority of the tombs dating from the Punic period. These ancient burial chambers, meticulously carved into the soft limestone of the hill, offer a profound connection to the past. Over centuries, the site also saw use during the Roman era, with additional burial chambers added, showcasing the continuous cultural evolution of the region. InstagramReddit

Beyond its historical significance, Tuvixeddu has a complex past. Sadly, many of the tombs were ransacked and robbed over the ages, and some were even repurposed as bomb shelters during World War II. Instagram Despite this, the site remains remarkably well-preserved, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore these ancient structures. The sheer scale of the necropolis, spread across the hillside, is impressive, with numerous individual tombs and quarry sites still visible today. Reddit

Today, Tuvixeddu is a free public park, allowing everyone to experience its historical depth and natural beauty. It's a place where history whispers from the stones, offering a quiet and contemplative atmosphere for visitors to learn about Sardinia's ancient inhabitants. The updated signage provides valuable context, making the exploration both educational and engaging. Reddit
