Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Duomo di Caorle and its bell tower for their stunning architecture and historical significance. The blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles, along with the unique cylindrical bell tower, are frequently highlighted as captivating features. The art within the cathedral, including notable paintings, adds to the profound experience. Some visitors note that the bell tower may have separate access or hours, and recommend checking locally.

"The Cathedral of Santo Stefano is the oldest monument in Caorle. It dominates in Piazza Vescovado, in the heart of the historic center. The structure visible today was erected in 1038 on the ruins of a pre-existing early Christian basilica of the seventh century, from which it takes some Byzantine-Ravenna details, later, due to the barbarian invasions that raged in nearby Concordia, Caorle became a bishopric until 1807. During this period, the numerous bishops left various testimonies of their work, from coats of arms to paintings and frescoes, but also sculptures in memory of particular events and even tombs that some of them wanted inside the cathedral. The facade takes up the classical canons of the Romanesque style. The large central door is surmounted by two rose windows and guarded by two Byzantine bas-reliefs from the 12th century, which portray Sant'Agatonico, on the left, and San Teodoro, on the right. Inside the cathedral the fusion of the Romanesque and Byzantine-Ravenna architectural styles can be recognized. Among various 14th century frescoes, large paintings, splendid sculptures and ancient relics, the naves are divided by rows of imposing columns and magnificent pillars that support wide arches. It is impossible not to notice the large fifteenth-century crucifix, suspended above the large central apse and illuminated by beautiful Byzantine-style lamps, it is equally difficult not to be captivated by the beauty of the Pala d'Oro displayed above the main altar. The right aisle also houses the most precious canvas: "The Last Supper" by Gregorio Lazzarini, master of Tiepolo, instead, in the left aisle, near the small apse, there is the painting of the "Saving of Peter" which, according to some historians, is attributed to the hands of Titian. Next to the Cathedral is an extremely beautiful and unusual bell tower, which complements the historical richness of the Cathedral with its significance."
