Reviews Summary

Visitors are drawn to the iconic Torre Vecchia and the stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, especially from the seafront. The convenience of parking and the presence of a nearby bar are appreciated. However, some express disappointment regarding the lack of interior access to the tower and the less developed urban landscape surrounding the historic center.

"I was there on holiday and I tried to get around as much as possible for the characteristic things of the place, searching on Google I came across this ancient tower, (there is a more modern twin about 20 km from there with an archaeological park in Capo Colonna) to enter just go to the gate immediately next to the tower but pay attention to children because there are no protections or fences at the edges but the overhang is straight!!!!!! ⚠️ it's lovely during the day, and at night too, lots of space to park and a bar in the area, I recommend visiting it if you're in the area!!!"

"Torre Vecchia is the landmark of the small resort town of Cappo Rizzuto. Its construction dates back to the 13th century at the instigation of the Swabian king. Its importance was to guard this stretch of coast.
Today, it is a sought-after photo opportunity, and the view sweeps across the Ionian Sea. Be careful, the coastline has been partially eroded and is not secured everywhere."

Gernot Berndt

"The old tower of Capo Rizzuto is an institution... it's a shame the surrounding area isn't being developed. Let's hope they finish developing the waterfront that starts right from the tower as soon as possible."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Torre Vecchia: A Coastal Sentinel

Torre Vecchia stands as a significant historical landmark in Capo Rizzuto, dating back to the 13th century. Commissioned by the Swabian king, its primary purpose was to guard this crucial stretch of the Calabrian coast against potential invaders. Today, it serves as an iconic symbol of the town and a popular destination for visitors seeking both history and scenic beauty.

The tower's strategic location offers sweeping panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. While the exterior is impressive, access to the interior may be limited, as noted by some visitors. Nevertheless, the surrounding area provides ample opportunities for photography and enjoying the coastal atmosphere. It's important to be aware that the coastline near the tower has undergone erosion and is not secured everywhere, so caution is advised.

Despite its historical significance, some reviews mention that the surrounding area could benefit from further development to enhance the visitor experience. However, the inherent beauty of the tower and its seaside setting continue to draw people to this characteristic spot.

Visitors often find ample parking available, making it convenient to explore the area. The seafront promenade is a highlight, providing a pleasant space for walks with stunning views of the Ionian Sea, especially captivating during both day and night.

However, it's worth noting that some visitors have commented on the urban landscape behind the tower, describing it as less developed or even a 'synonym for illegal construction.'
