"Privately owned castle with an alleged connection with Dante Alighieri. Can only be visited with a guide. The guide though is one of the owners of the castle so he is very knowledgeable and friendly. The view is stunning and the castle history very interesting. When my friend and I visited there was a photographic exhibition in one of castle wings, which was a lovely plus.
So while there is an entry price, you get a very personal experience as the groups tend to be small. Today it was just the two of us!
Note: they also do aperitivo and various events (treasure hunt, escape experience, wine tasting - separate cost for these)."

"Castle Contignaco is positioned high in the hills above Salsomaggiore and it is easy to appreciate its strategic position as defender of a valuable ancient salt route which runs through this stunning landscape. The views from the castle are truly spectacular.
From the outside the castle is impressive, formidable but appears small. However, the castle was once much larger and you can see the remains of several defensive walls.We spent a few memorable hours here, following a guided tour of the castle and sampling artisan wines, cheese - and an extra treat of pears from the garden. Our poor Italian language skills proved no barrier as Daniele and Emanuele engaged with us perfectly in English.
The castle has much to offer visitors of diverse ages. Conference facilities are available and it would be a magical, atmospheric setting for a wedding. We enjoyed our visit very much and hope that others will too. Castle Contignaco takes you back in time and looks to the future."
