Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Castiglione della Pescaia for its beautiful medieval core and stunning panoramic views from the castle area, especially at sunset. However, some find the town can become overwhelmingly crowded in the evenings and note that prices are higher compared to neighboring areas. The castle itself is privately owned, limiting interior access, but the exterior and surrounding village are highly recommended.

"Castiglione Della Pescaia is indeed a beautiful and interesting place, but in certain places, especially in the evening hours, it is flooded with an inexhaustible crowd of tourists, which somewhat spoils the impression. It also deviates upwards in price compared to other places in the area. But it has an interesting old core, built around and under a medieval castle, with some churches, palaces and squares. The city is clean, and the surrounding area is also worth seeing..."

"The castle overlooking the village originates from a watchtower built by the Pisans and was expanded in the 15th century by the Aragonese until it took on the appearance of a true fortress. The other two towers were built over the next two centuries, while the curtain walls and the buildings between them were constructed during the Renaissance. Modified under Cosimo I and then under the House of Lorraine in the late 18th century, it underwent a complete restoration in the early 20th century by the architect Lorenzo Porciatti, who made it his private residence. It cannot be visited as it is privately owned. The castle consists of three corner towers crowned by crenellations, the most massive of which is the original Pisan Tower. The main building is located on the western side, facing the sea, while on the other sides the complex is surrounded by curtain walls that enclose an internal courtyard. Another curtain wall, complete with battlements, begins at the southwest tower and delimits the area around the castle's southern side. Near the tower, an arched door leads to a panoramic terrace."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

History of Castello Aragonese

The Castello Aragonese in Castiglione della Pescaia boasts a rich history, originating from a Pisan watchtower. It was significantly expanded in the 15th century by the Aragonese, transforming it into a formidable fortress. Over the centuries, it underwent further modifications, including additions of towers, curtain walls, and internal buildings during the Renaissance and later under the House of Lorraine.

Despite its historical significance, the castle is now privately owned and not open for interior visits. However, its imposing exterior and the strategic location it occupies continue to draw visitors. The restoration in the early 20th century by architect Lorenzo Porciatti, who made it his private residence, preserved its architectural integrity. The complex features three corner towers, the most prominent being the original Pisan Tower, and a main building facing the sea, all surrounded by defensive walls. Reddit

Visitors can still appreciate the castle's grandeur from the outside and from the panoramic terrace, which offers a unique perspective on the town and the surrounding landscape. This terrace, accessible via an arched door near the southwest tower, provides an excellent vantage point for photography and soaking in the historical atmosphere. Reddit

Experiencing the Medieval Village

The Borgo Medievale of Castiglione della Pescaia is an integral part of the castle experience. This charming old town is built around and beneath the fortress, creating a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, stone archways, and ancient buildings. Wandering through these alleys feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the town's historical past. TikTok

Many visitors highlight the photogenic nature of the medieval village. The textures of the stone, the colorful flower pots adorning windowsills, and the glimpses of the sea between buildings make it a delight for photographers. It’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes as the cobblestone paths can be uneven and the village is built on a slope. TikTok

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the borgo is dotted with small shops, artisan boutiques, and charming cafes. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, perhaps stopping for an aperitivo or a gelato while taking in the unique atmosphere. The blend of history, architecture, and local life makes exploring the medieval village a must-do activity. Instagram
