Reviews Summary

Travelers praise the Circumetnea Railway for its unique charm, scenic views of Mount Etna, and affordable fares, offering a genuine glimpse into Sicilian life. However, some visitors note confusion regarding the current operational routes and the infrequent, sometimes suspended, service, recommending careful timetable checks and preparation with snacks.

"We were under the impression this train could take us to - or at least near Mt. Etna from the website. We walked from the center of Catania where we were staying for five days only to find that we would need to go to another station by Uber or bus and take the train there. It was hard to understand the woman at the counter - who really did try to help us find our way. It was great to at least view the station, though no trains were coming in or out at the time. Mt. Etna will have to wait till next trip. :("

"Had a great trip on this little railway. Check the timetable carefully before travelling, as services are irregular and infrequent.

At the time I was there, service was suspended between Catania and Paterno, with a replacement bus from Nesiima metro station (included in the train fare).

Tickets can be bought from the office at Borgo station, next to the Metro station (even though the trains don't run from there any more)."

"It was a real pleasure to ride on this one, my childish railroader heart was set afluttered. I'm glad that I heard of it by a colleague back home in Germany, otherwise I'd maybe missed it I assume. Had three very pleasurable 2-hour-breaks in Randazzo, Linguaglossa and Riposto, which were genuine gems beside the tracks. So was the ride in general, the breathtaking views on Mount Etna and the deep and wide-ranging valleys on the other side have a safe place inside my memory. Thank you for this marvellous adventure!"

Navigating the Circumetnea Railway Today

The Ferrovia Circumetnea is a historic narrow-gauge railway that circles Mount Etna in Sicily. Originally connecting Catania to numerous villages around the volcano, its operational status has seen changes. The historic Catania Borgo station and the section towards Paternò have been closed, with the latter permanently decommissioned. This means the traditional full loop is no longer possible from the city center. Instagram+1

Travelers now often rely on the Catania Metro to reach Nesima station, from where replacement bus services are sometimes provided to connect with the operational parts of the Circumetnea line. It's crucial to check the latest timetable and operational status before your visit, as services can be infrequent and subject to suspension. TikTokReddit

Despite these changes, the Circumetnea Railway remains a unique and scenic way to experience the Sicilian countryside. The journey offers breathtaking views of Mount Etna and passes through charming, less-touristed towns, providing an authentic glimpse into local life. InstagramReddit

A Photographer's Guide to the Circumetnea

For photography enthusiasts, the Circumetnea Railway presents a fantastic opportunity to capture unique shots. The narrow-gauge trains themselves, especially the older rolling stock and the modern Newag Volcano units, are visually interesting against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Etna. Instagram+2

Key photographic locations include the stations themselves, such as Randazzo or Linguaglossa, where you can frame the trains with local architecture and the volcanic landscape. The open stretches of track winding through vineyards and lava fields offer stunning panoramic views. Consider timing your visit for the golden hours to enhance the dramatic lighting on the volcano and the trains. Instagram+1

Be prepared for the infrequent schedule; patience is key. While the historic Borgo station is closed for departures, it can still be an interesting subject for photography, representing the railway's past. Always be mindful of safety and respect any operational restrictions when seeking the perfect shot. Instagram
