📍COLLE DI VAL d’ELSA, TUSCANY A sleepy little town which we had to ourselves on this visit. So much history here, a well preserved medieval centre with mentions of this town from the 9th century! So pretty to walk along the cobblestone streets and take in all the views. We had a delicious dinner at Mille Luci including carbonara ravioli, vegetable strudel, spinach & ricotta Gnudi, and tradition...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Palazzo Pretorio and Colle Alta for their well-preserved medieval charm and peaceful atmosphere, offering a genuine Tuscan experience. The historical significance of the Palazzo's facade and the insights from the Archaeological Museum are frequently highlighted. Some visitors note the quiet nature of the town, which can be a pro for those seeking tranquility but might mean fewer immediate amenities.

"Palazzo Pretorio, or Palazzo del Podestà, is a large civic building dating back to the 14th century. The main façade, facing the square, is adorned with numerous stone coats of arms of the Podestà and Commissioners who governed the city over the centuries. Today, it houses the Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from the Upper Elsa Valley.

Right in front of the Palazzo dei Priori (on the opposite side of the square) is an ancient fountain known as the Fontana del Comune, dating back to the 16th century. The tourist sign there tells us that the central feature of the entire architectural structure was the fountain's mouth, which (until a few years ago) consisted of an ancient marble horse's head from the early 3rd century AD, a feature now replaced by a stone composition."
