Reviews Summary

Visitors acknowledge the historical significance of the Antonio Stradivari Monument as the burial site of the legendary luthier. However, many note that the monument itself is a simple replica and easily overlooked, with the original tombstone housed in the Civic Museum. While Cremona is praised as a city rich in art and architecture, some feel the monument could be better promoted.

"Every violin player and enthusiast must see it when in Cremona."

Ilya F

"The site deserves attention for its historical significance, but it appears underprotected, partly because it is a simple copy of the tombstone, which is instead kept in the Civic Museum.
No bodily or skeletal remains of the great violin maker have survived. Where the park now stands (Piazza Roma) once stood the church of San Domenico with its adjoining monastery. The famous violin maker, who died on December 18, 1737, was buried there, in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. A few years earlier, he had the tombstone made and purchased the tomb for himself and his family. He had the following engraved on the slab:
"Tomb of Antonio Stradivari and his heirs, year 1729."
In 1869, the church of San Domenico was demolished, and Stradivari's tomb underwent a highly unorthodox treatment, considering the caliber of the world-famous figure: according to some, it was uncovered on June 30 by workers and technicians. The city council was expected to intervene to prevent the tomb from being lost, but no decision was forthcoming. Others believe the city administration established a commission to search for the bones, which were never found. One anecdote relates that shortly thereafter, a stranger arrived from Milan, picked up a skull, said "Stradivari!", and took it away. It is unknown whether the skull was actually that of the violin maker, because the tomb also contained the remains of six other members of his family. Three skulls ended up in the home of the master builder in charge of demolishing the church (his name was Francesco Ferrari); after several years, the Ferrari family—tired of seeing them around the house—packed the skulls and took them to a mass grave in the Cremona Cemetery.
Those seeking the tombstone should head to the Civic Museum, while a replica is located in the Piazza Roma Park: in a flowerbed, there is a concrete and marble memorial commemorating the place where the great violin maker was buried. A copy of the tombstone is set above, with an information panel next to it."
