Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Punta Vrica for its unique geological significance as a GSSP and its stunning panoramic sea views. The natural beauty and the opportunity to connect with Earth's history are highly valued. Some note that it's a natural site with limited amenities, requiring preparation.

"GSSPs—an acronym for Global Stratigraphic Sections and Points—are rock outcrops that physically mark a boundary between two geological ages and in which the greatest amount of physical, chemical, and paleontological information about that boundary has been found compared to other outcrops also containing the same stratigraphic boundary. They have been identified by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in locations across various continents.
On the geologic timescale, the Calabrian is the second of the four stages into which the Pleistocene, the first of the two epochs of the Quaternary, is divided. It spans from 1.806 to 0.781 million years ago (Ma).
The Calabrian derives its name from Calabria, the Italian region where the reference stratigraphic sections for this period were identified. Specifically, at Vrica, 4 km south of Crotone, at an altitude of 159 meters. It is easily accessible, continuously exposed, and devoid of vegetation cover.
The Vrica GSSP was defined by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in 1985. It was the first Italian GSSP to be ratified.
The Vrica Section acquired its importance as a GSSP also thanks to the numerous paleontological, biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic, and geochronometric studies conducted by numerous specialists.
Protected Area/Park: Only in 1989 did the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, with a Decree dated November 10, 1989, restrict three areas in the Vrica and Stuni areas pursuant to Article 1 of Law 1089/39."

Giuseppe Celsi

"It represents in a single moment 2.5 million years of geological history of Europe and the Mediterranean, immersed in the scents and colours of a rich thero-brachypodietea vegetation (it is a SIC area)"

Enrico Franza

"A place to visit where you can get lost in an immense panorama made of sea sun and wind. Typical plantations of. Vrica."
