"The Victory Lighthouse, also known as the Maddalena Lighthouse, is an imposing commemorative monument located atop the Maddalena Hill, within Turin's Parco della Rimembranza (Park of Remembrance). Designed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Italy's victory in the First World War, it was funded by Giovanni Agnelli, founder of FIAT. The work, dedicated to the Winged Victory, was created by the Turin-born sculptor Edoardo Rubino (1871–1954), a multifaceted artist known for monuments, sepulchral works, decorative works, engravings, and illustrations. Rubino was also a professor, president, and central figure at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin, with works exhibited in international collections and museums. His skill in modeling marble and bronze, combined with his ability to depict the human figure with realistic strength and symbolist elegance, made him one of the most appreciated Italian sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. The bronze statue, made in three parts, weighs 25 tons, stands 18.5 meters tall, and rests on an 8-meter-high Baveno granite base. At the time of its construction, it was one of the tallest statues in the world, after the Statue of Liberty in New York (46 meters) and the San Carlo Borromeo in Arona (23 meters). The face was modeled on Cecilia Lavelli (1906–1998), a professional painter and model, collaborator of the Accademia Albertina, and mother of the Turin artist and sculptor Piero Gilardi. The base, featuring a reinforced concrete foundation and an internal access via stairs, allows access up to the wings, where a concealed door provides access to the outside. On the side facing Turin, an epigraph composed by Gabriele D’Annunzio is engraved. The hill was lowered and leveled to accommodate the monument, at the expense of the Municipality and Agnelli himself. The monument replaced a commemorative travertine altar, adorned with bronze elements and dedicated to the fallen of the Great War. The altar was moved to Piazzale Gorizia, where it still stands, and was raised on a new base for greater prominence. The lighthouse, housed in the torch held aloft by the statue, is visible throughout the city and its surroundings, requiring the installation of a 3-kilowatt lamp and a dedicated high-voltage power line and cable. Next to the monument is a granite orientation table, with a brass top plate, which indicates the compass rose and the direction of the main Alpine peaks, visible on clear days. The inauguration, scheduled for May 24, 1928, in the presence of the sovereign, was canceled due to Senator Agnelli's mourning, the death of his daughter Aniceta Caterina three days earlier. However, the lighthouse was lit on that date anyway, illuminating the hilltop for the first time. Neglected for years and malfunctioning, a complex restoration of the entire monument was completed in 2013. This consolidated the structure, restored the systems, and cleaned the surfaces, fully restoring it to its original symbolic and visual function."
