"A tower built between 1493 and 1497 by order of Ercole I d'Este, designed by architect Biagio Rossetti. It immediately served as a defensive barrier, with walls two and a half meters thick, necessary to support the heavy artillery of the time (each weighing several tons). In the 19th century, it also served for customs duties and other controls, but was also used as a warehouse and powder magazine, risking demolition, as was the case with the nearby gate. Porta San Giovanni (or Porta Mare), modified after Napoleon's invasion of 1796, was later eliminated to make way for the tram line."
