"Nice"
Saeed Yadegari
"A tower built between 1493 and 1497 by order of Ercole I d'Este, designed by architect Biagio Rossetti. It immediately served as a defensive barrier, with walls two and a half meters thick, necessary to support the heavy artillery of the time (each weighing several tons). In the 19th century, it also served for customs duties and other controls, but was also used as a warehouse and powder magazine, risking demolition, as was the case with the nearby gate. Porta San Giovanni (or Porta Mare), modified after Napoleon's invasion of 1796, was later eliminated to make way for the tram line."

The History and Architecture of Torrione di San Giovanni
Beyond its military function, the Torrione served various roles throughout history. In the 19th century, it was utilized for customs duties and other control measures. It also functioned as a warehouse and powder magazine. There were even periods when its demolition was considered, a fate that befell the nearby Porta San Giovanni (or Porta Mare), which was altered after Napoleon's invasion in 1796 and later removed for a tram line.
Today, the Torrione di San Giovanni is celebrated not just for its historical architecture but also for its vibrant cultural life. It is the home of the Ferrara Jazz Club, an establishment so esteemed that it has been recognized by a US magazine as one of the 10 most beautiful jazz clubs globally. This dual identity—a fortress of the past and a sanctuary of music—makes the Torrione a unique landmark.
Experiencing Ferrara's Medieval Charm
Beyond the castle, the city's historic center beckons with its well-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture. Piazza Trento e Trieste is the heart of the city, surrounded by significant buildings like the Cattedrale di San Giorgio. A particularly atmospheric experience awaits on Via delle Volte, a street that vividly evokes the medieval era with its characteristic covered passageways and arches.
Exploring Ferrara is best done on foot, allowing you to discover hidden courtyards and charming alleys. The city offers a more relaxed pace compared to larger Italian cities, making it ideal for a leisurely day trip focused on history, culture, and authentic Italian ambiance.
