Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Cappella di San Paolo to be a hidden gem in Galatina, offering a profound connection to the region's unique history of tarantism. While its small size and unpredictable opening hours can be a drawback, those who manage to visit often describe an intimate, moving experience, especially when a volunteer shares the captivating legends. It's a place that truly resonates with the soul of Salento.

"What can I say.... If you don't go to see this place you didn't make the best of your visit in Galatina. Just go!!"

Roberto Mandorino

"As soon as I set foot in Galatina, I sensed this wouldn't be a visit like any other. The cobbled streets of the historic center led me almost naturally to a hidden gem: the Chapel of Saint Paul. From the outside, it appears simple, almost discreet, but as soon as you enter, you understand that within those walls lies a universe of stories, legends, and faith that will leave you breathless.

The atmosphere is incredible: intimate, secluded, filled with silences that speak louder than words. The stones seem imbued with the voices of those who, over the centuries, have come here in search of hope. It's not a place you observe: it's a place you feel, you experience firsthand.

What struck me most is the tradition surrounding Saint Paul and tarantism. To think that right here, in front of that well guarded in the chapel, men and women bitten by the tarantula came to ask for the saint's grace is chilling. The idea that spider venom could be "exorcized" with water and dance, transforming it into rhythm, into pizzica, into an ancestral language capable of healing body and spirit, makes this place unique.

Leaving the chapel, I felt as if I had touched something rare: an authentic connection between the sacred and the profane, between faith and popular culture. Here, there are not only ancient walls, but a living soul that still beats strongly today and continues to tell travelers that Salento is much more than sea and sun.

Visiting the Chapel of San Paolo means treating yourself to an encounter with the deepest soul of this land: an intense, moving experience that remains etched in the heart."

Luigi Rizzo

"A tiny chapel where tarantate (those afflicted with tarantulas) would go to ask for mercy.
The chapel itself isn't anything special, but if it's open, inside you'll find a volunteer who will explain many things about the tarantino phenomenon. Free of charge.
It was very interesting.
Well done."
